Post subject:  The KJ as a RV Toad

I know there are some members who tow their KJ behind their RV. What kind of tow hardware do you recommend? Can it also be used as a winch mount?

You definitely cannot tow it with a front hitch. When you tow a vehicle over the road it needs to have 2 attachment points for stability.

You can either flat tow (all 4 wheels on the ground) with a tow bar setup, or you can use a tow dolly (2 wheels on a trailer and 2 on the ground).

Either option attaches to a standard hitch on the RV. The tow bar might require removal or modification of your tow hooks because I believe it attaches at the same spot. The tow dolly would require no modification to your KJ.

Hope that helps.

I didn't think you could dolly tow a KJ. I thought it had to be 4 up or 4 down.

I believe camping world sells a tow bar for 4 down towing, but I'm sure you could find it cheaper elsewhere. RV.net has a whole section on toad's - you might want to check there.

Im pretty sure you can 2wheel tow with the libby, it has the feature to put the tcase in N which I think disconnects the drivelines. If it was me I would use a tow dolly just to keep miles off the front drive train(cv joints, front diff, driveline).

You can tow a KJ on a dolly. But it's a pain and a half if you need to reverse. The dolly moves, and the KJ pivots on the dolly. Drove me crazy.

Put it backwards on the dolly and it won't pivot. ;)

I have'nt done it, but I've seen many KJs being towed behind RVs. Somebody on this site had a set up for being towed behind a RV that was able to have a winch attatched to it when it was'nt being towed. I'll see if I can track it down.

I'm going to bring this tread back and see if anyone towed a KJ on a dolly recently. I have free use of a dolly and was thinking of towing the KJ on it, but I was just looking in the owners manual again and I can't really find an answer 1 way or the other. It gives directions for 4-down towing and when its on a wrecker, it says all 4 wheels should be up.

Thanks in advance.

Post subject:  Flat towing

I've been flat towing Jeeps for quite a while, including my Liberty. My choice for a tow bar is the Stowmaster because it's easy to hook up; it has sliding arms so you have an adjustment factor in case you're not lined up exactly. If you don't have one of these types, it's usually a two person job.

On the Liberty at first it required 2 receiver hitch mounts, a 1 1/2" special size, about where tow hooks would be, plus a lateral strengthener. Later a front hitch was added to which I mounted a winch. That was a problem, though, because I had to take off the winch (and put it on the rear) when I towed. So I finally got an ARB front bumper into which the winch goes and the mounting plates for the tow bar have been added. All this wasn't cheap, but it's a great setup. The tow bar alone is about $450; the bumper $900. I've towed the Liberty many thousands of miles without any problems.

You can back it up some if you go straight. Lock the steering wheel in center position first, otherwise the wheels will turn and bind up. I was once able to back up about 100' this way, got me out of a pickle without disconnecting.

For all towing, put the transfer case in neutral and the transmission in Park (not neutral). To me, why bother with a dolly? If you want a good alternative, use a utility trailer with enough GVR, preferably with brakes. Then you can back any which way and maybe carry extra stuff too. The down side is the extra weight of the trailer and loading and unloading. For simple convenience, I like towing flat.

The only reason I was considering a dolly is because my dad has one and I can use it free. The more I read into this though, I don't think its a recommended set up.

The owners manual has this warning as part of the disabled vehicle section:

CAUTION! Internal damage to the transfer case will occur if a front or rear wheel lift is used when recreational towing.

Don't know why this would be a factor if the transfer case was in neutral, but DC went to all this trouble to print it, so?
