| Post subject: | Runaway Rear Wiper |
My rear wiper is out of control. Anybody know how to fix it? When the wiper is on it slowly creeps forward. It never goes back to the original 'off' position (sitting flat on it's support, clear of the rear glass to the passenger side). My blade creeps about a 1/2" forward with each stroke. When I turn it off, it's ususally sitting on the glass at a 2 o'clock position. I usually just turn the blade back to the normal off position when I get to my destination. Tonight it must have gone too far. It just stopped working, with the blade past the bottom of the glass on the drivers side. I turned it off, manually moved the blade 180 degrees back to its off location, and figured it's time to fix. Anybody know how to tighten the wiper mount so the blade doesn't gradually advance its position? My KJ's still under warranty, so I'll take her to the dealer if it takes more than 15 minutes to fix this. I'm not too excited about a wiper repair project. Thanks, Kev |

i'd take it in but wouldn't hurt to play with it yourself and see how to change arms and stuff. no harder than changing a blade. it could be stripped threads on the wiper arm (easy to check. should just have to lift the arm and look underneath for a U clip you pull to release the arm, and pull it right off). could be the motor is shot. not sure if it is like the fronts and has gears or other rotating crap in there or if the arm connects directly to the motor itself. but if it has gears and such then could simply be a loose bolt. its a very simple mechanism, you can figure it out in minutes. |

I fixed it. Took about 10 seconds. As soon as I tried to pull the wiper arm off its mount, a little flap flipped open at the base, exposing the nut that secures the arm to the motor. It was loose! I tightened it up with pliers and now it works like a champ! Kev |

Make sure you install it in the correct position and verify that the "cone" on the arm is not damaged or you will have problems again. My reccomendation is to take it to the dealer and have them replace the wiper arm and reinstall a new one in the correct position and torque the nut to the proper spec (don't remember the number). Since the arm moved the "splines" on the motor are probably full of zinc from the head and the cone is now not the corect size. The shaft needs to be cleaned to remove the zinc from the splines- it will not damage the shaft as it is heat treated steel. Also the arm needs to be positioned properly and torqued to the correct spec. Since the head is zinc, it will come loose (creep) if over torqued and could also come loose when underload (operating or under snow conditions) if under torqued. My 2 cents worth... |
