They are paper!! The guy on the phone said they were cork gaskets and I said heck yea Ill take two. Got them in today only to find out they are made out of paper! How the heck is that going to seal around the rear diff. Ohh, btw these are gaskets for the rear 8.25.

Pics.

They are about as thick as a note card.

They were only $2.73 a piece, but my gosh.

Might as well just use RTV. Check out LubeLocker gaskets if you want the real deal. I hope to be carrying them in stock for KJ applications soon after Moab.

I've been using the paper gaskets from my local auto-part store. No leaks at all. It fact I like it alot better than RTV. My RTV always seems to leak after about 6 months. Plus you can re-use the paper gasket in a pinch if need be (trail repair). I re-used one for about a month one time without any problems, didn't even leak. Also, there is just less of a mess when you pull the rear cover. You don't need to spend 25 minutes trying to clean all the RTV off the cover and diff. Also, you don't need to worry about getting some oil on the matting surface when putting the cover back on. So many reason why I like a gasket better. I've never had any problems with the paper feel-pro gaskets I get at the local auto part store.

You will be just fine, they look very similar to what I use. Make sure the both matting surfaces are free of RTV just line it up and bolt it down to the right torque.

Thanks eddo. I had no idea that a gasket could be made out of paper and seal good on the diff. Ill try my best to clean all the old rtv off. Would it be a bad idea to use a steel brush on my dremel to clean it up?

Im going to put a power-trax in this weekend, Ill be sure to take alot of pics for everyone.

The Dremel might be overkill. A scraper and wire brush will do you just fine.

RTV, was gunna tell you but you had already bought them... no big deal.

Just use a flat head screw driver and peel it off the factory stuff.

Never had RTV leak on mean. I use the blue stuff, grey stuff is good too.

Ive change the oil in many rear ends, Im no noob at this. Thats why I wanted these gaskets b/c I knew it would make it much faster+easier when I change the oil down the road. I guess ill stick to the putty knife.

Mine is orange. I use black sometimes too.

Yea really! I guess they think the rear gears should be checked at every oil change for wear/broken teeth.

paper works fine but why? the RTV works great

Well like I said, its alot faster, quicker, no clean up. Its just better all around.

Like eddo said, you can reuse them when on the trail and cant wait for the rtv to set up. if you get into water you can change out the fluid quickly with no mess and clean up.

Best to use a puddy knife to get most of it off. However, I did use a finishing buff wheel for a dremel on the cover to all the little scattered pieces RTV off. Like
this one. It worked quite nicely and cleaned it up rather quickly.

I'll date myself on this but...we used to make our own gaskets. You could buy card stock gasket material. You take a ball pean hammer, lay the paper over your item and hammer around the whatever and "cut" the material to fit. Paper was all we used before RTV.

I made a gasket for mine, '02.

I had used RTV and it leaked three times. I'd had enough of that and got some gasket material and made one.

This was when a lot of parts weren't yet being listed for the Liberty. Now it takes a FelPro RDS55047. And now I've still got the rest of a yard of heavy gasket material.

At the time I wasn't Chrysler-savvy enough to cross-reference the gasket to some other application, like a Durango.

Don't know the problem with the RTV; I had just done the 8.8 rear in my Ford with RTV, and no problems.
