OK, I tend to research a project prior to deciding weather or not to go for it. So a potential project is a rear diff. This is a daily driver so good road manners are a must. Cost is also a concern.

Questions are:
1) limited slip or locking?
2) Brand?
3) Why?

Thanks.

What's your reason for wanting a locker? Do you do serious off-roading? If so, do you have full skids, a beefy rear diff cover, rock sliders, aggressive tires, front/rear recovery points, and a lift? That locker will get you into trouble in the bush if you are not properly equipped otherwise. I'd focus on the other stuff first if off road capability is your goal.

Guess I was looking for opinions the the questions asked, not so much being second guessed on my reasons for wanting it, or lack of preparedness for assumed uses . I also mentioned I am researching for a future project. I tend to PREPLAN for future use, as well as address current concerns.

Now I will answer the questions you asked:
1 my own
2 depends on your definition of serious
3 no
4 no
5 no
6 A/T Tires
7 front in the works rear yes, its called a hitch
8 later this summer

As for your concern about my "getting into trouble in the bush", rest assured I've been taking 4 wheel drives off road since the days we had an International Harvestor pick up in the late 70s and early 80's. And that, my friend had non of the necessary stuff you mentioned for off road use.

I am going dtt front rear. If I went any cheaper I'd lose on road manners. (A full locker or lunchbox are not as seemless as truetrac) Any more expensive I should have a dedicated trail rig. ( I would only NEED the extra traction from an ARB if I was doing something I shouldn't be in my daily driver) I got the front dtt, and i'm pricing out the rear with gears to purchase soon...

I too have been leaning tword a LSD overa locker. However I've read conflicting opinions on the lock right no slip's road manners.

If you were to put a DTT and gears to match your tires, assuming you're running larger tires or plan to, you'd probably be pretty happy. What are you driving? I saw in your sig your KJ was totaled. Detroit changed their locker a little bit, they say they're a little softer engaging and disengaging.

I total the red one, but nothing else suits my needs any better, so I got a blue on within a month. And this one has a sunroof. :pepper:

For a DD avoid a lunchbox locer like an Aussie or a tru-trac. I have an Aussie in my YJ with the Ford 8.8 rearend and although it gives great traction, the road manners are not to good, especially in snow and ice.

A LSD is not much of an offload option if you plan on doing anything more then mild dirt roads.

Your best option in my opinion is a selectable locker like an ARB, OX, etc.... The biggest drawback to these style lockers is that they require the gears to be setup which requires special tool and some knowledge of setting them up. I suggest finding a local shop that can set up gears and ask them what they recommend for a selectable locker. On the trails I see a lot of ARB, but they require an air source.

I don't know if anyone makes a lunchbox locker for the weird D30 in the liberty, but a lunchbox locker in the front is fine for a DD since it only works when power is applied in 4wd.

A true-trac is an LSD, but a REALLY good one... No lunch box up front!

So, a Tru Trac is good up front but not out back?

A tru trac probably the best limited slip made. It has a unique gear design. I don't know what design but if you have the brake lock diff like a kk has, the DTT should be a good fit. From what I've been able to find out, they work very well. I've decided to put one in each axel when I have my gears done. Since I tow a camper, I was advised against my first choice of a DTT front and a Detroit locker rear. The eaton e locker is also a good choice. If you're planning on anything other than a DTT in the front then a selectable locker should be used. :2cents:

x2 for upfront

For the rear, a truetrac is great, not as solidly locked as other lockers, but that means it's better for on road... so depending on your use, a dtt is great out back or just okay, but NEVER a bad idea (imho)
