Hey, I have a 03 Jeep Liberty. Speedo stopped working a couple of months ago. code comes up as p0500. I have searched all the forums, doing what they have said. I replaced the rear speed sensor on the rear axle, and checked those wires for rubbing on the e brake cable. Replaced the abs wheel sensors on two front wheels. Checked all the wires behind the dash, cant find any nicks or loose connections. I tried to re calibrate the whole instrument cluster (hold down trip and turn ignition on) and it gets power and re calibrates. but still just doesn't work!
It's driving me nuts and i really really don't wanna take it to a dealer for this problem.

Hope someone can help me out!!

Thanks

not sure on these newer vehicles but the older ones i would bet on the cable being bad and replace the cable. if that doesnt do it ild guess it was the speedo bad and replace it. the only vehicle i have ever had a speedo problem on is a 75 pontiac ventura and it was a bad speedo cable so i might not be much help but i tried.

No speedo cable on a KJ.

To the OP you may have bad wiring that is not seen.I had bad wires inside the connector to the rear speed sensor, could not see until I removed the wires from the connector.

Ok, I'll check that out. Do I just disconnect the sensor in the back and just the wires going into it?

Also do you think it would have anything to do with the transmission input output sensors being faulty?

thanks for your response

To find my broke wires I had to pull the wires out of the connector, body side, which pretty much ruined the connector anyway. You can buy a pigtail repair connector kit from the dealership.

Those sensors on the trans have nothing to do with the speedo, those are used for the trans only.

took a look at those wires and nothing. all the wires looked good and looked like they had a good connection.
I meant to mention this, earlier when it this problem started it would just stop working then start up again. It would gradually get worse to the point when it wouldnt work for around 20 mins, then i noticed if i banged on the dash the needle would jump and start working then, or shortly there after. So would that hint at a loose connection maybe at the instrument cluster?
