Post subject:  2004 kj electrical issues

My girlfriend was driving the kj yesterday when the check engine light came on, then the horn started blowing. She pulled over at a gas station and had them check the oil which was ok and the horn stopped but the gas guage read empty with a half tank of gas. On her way home she found out none of the windows work. I started it when I got home from work and looked at the obvious and found nothing. When I turned the jeep off and removed the key it kept running for maybe 10 seconds. It seems like the ignition switch is a little looser than I recall. Could all these issues be caused by the switch?

Please help
Mike

Check all grounds. Look for water in the fuse panel under the hood and make sure there's no water in the cabin on driver side rear floor under the back seat. That is all the places that have junction boxes that can cause those problems.

Sometimes when the Battery is about ready to go out the Kj does strange things. I have seen it happen before.

Always a good idea to have a good look at the ignition switch/actuator as this is a common failure point.

Remove the plastic cover over the steering column column and remove the ignition switch off the end of the ignition actuator assembly...you need a small security Torx male with a hole down the center. If you see a small piece of plastic/metal fall off from the end of the actuator pin then that is your problem as it is unable to turn the ignition switch properly. You can start the jeep by turning the ignition switch with a small flat screwdriver in the meantime....make sure the ignition key is in its normal slot to unlock steering lock and to enable SKIS if you have this installed.

Make sure all fuses in the fuse boxes inside the cabin and under the hood are not blown and make sure you have a good battery, good clean tight connections on the battery, where the negative battery connection goes to ground and the grounding strap from the engine to chassis is clean and tight.

About every other month I experience electrical problems as well (it lasts for a few days to a week and then goes away. Common problems are the doors always trying to lock and occasionally my headlights flicker). After months of searching the web and whatnot I found out that there was a recall that fit the year/model of my car. It had something to do about the BCM being faulty. I believe your '04 (mine is an '05) should be covered by it. Either way, that should be a good place to start. One of these days I'll get up and actually have my dealership fix this issue :ROTFL:
