My trans temp light recently came on as I topped a steep grade. (on highway) My KJ is due for it third trans fluid and filter change. I picked up a trans filter kit, fluid, and a trans cooler, and I'm hoping a alleviate any future trans temp problems, and keep my transmission alive... I would like to keep my factory installed transmission cooler, and mount the after market one above it. I would like to keep the factory installed transmission line going to the factory installed trans cooler as is, then route fluid coming from the factory installed cooler to the aftermarket cooler with a male thread to barb adapter, using the rubber line that came with the aftermarket cooler then out of the aftermarket cooler back to the factory installed. The cooler I bought is a Hayden 404. I can tell you for certain that the thread size of the factory installed trans cooler is not 3/8" NPT.... My Jeep is a 2005 Renegade with the 3.7 and the 42rle trans... |

My transmission cooler is part of the A/C condenser.

Thanks Ted! I was almost certain what I was trying to tap into was my factory installed trans cooler, now I know for certain that it is; I traced the lines from the trans directly to the cooler. I just ordered the Hayden trans line fitting kit # 390 from a local parts store; I hope these are the correct fittings for what I'm trying to accomplish...If not, they said I could return them..I was hoping to have the cooler installed yesterday, and avoid having to order fittings...Oh well, the fittings I ordered will arrive in the morning and tomorrow is my day off from work... |

There's a mechanical fan that comes on a KK with the tow package. Maybe you could put something like that on as well. I think it's listed as a viscous fan. |

I've been looking into adding a '02 radiator as well. Any drawbacks/negatives to doing that as well? I found that a recycler near me has a rear-ended '02 KJ with lots of good parts...They are asking $85 for the radiator. I figure if they can give me some sort of warranty that it holds pressure, then have it pressure tested/cleaned at a local radiator shop. It would also be a perfect time to drain/refill my coolant... I finally got the trans cooler installed, and was able to use the factory cooler as well. None of the fittings I purchased, or the one that came with the cooler fit. I ended up using a fitting that I pulled from an old carb to come out of the factory cooler. I thought I'd found a fitting that fit the return line to the trans, but it didn't; it was very close and I ended up cross-threading the factory fitting. That left me with two options, cut the factory soft line and purchase bar fitting, or cut the factory hard line, and use a hose clamp. I chose the later. I've checked it for leaks, and topped off the fluid level, everything seems fine... |
