I ordered a Mopar fuel/water separator filter for my 2006 CRD, and there's a plastic piece rattling around in there. Is this of concern? Should I send it back? :?:

Probably yes. When you ordered the unit you should have gotten a fully assembled fuel filter head with the filter and water in fuel sensor installed plus the new fuel heater wiring pigtail (cut off old pigtail; assemble new plug with 2 wires and blue plastic clip; attach to old wiring matching wires by size not color using solder or good marine grade butt connectors).

I don't know what you mean by plastic piece rattleing around in there. What does the piece look like and where is "in there". Other than the fuel filter and WIF sensor the head is 2 pieces of aluminum essentially bolted together with the thing the filter screws to; a couple of cast in sensors; 2 metal hose barbs; a gasket between the 2 halves; and the metal bleed screw. There should be nothing loose.

I ordered only the fuel filter--essentially it looks like a metal can with a paper filter inside. I didn't order the whole unit. The piece rattling around looks like a plastic X. I can see it through the hole that goes down the center, and it moves.

I've gone through several filters - never had anything rattling in the filter.
never had any plastic X's.

There is typically a plastic plug in the bottom where the water sensor goes - but it shouldn't be broken off - or rattling.

not sure it's a problem - but it's not normal

if you can get a refund/replacement - I'd go for that

there are enough problems with the stock fuel system - I wouldn't want to add variables.

Well, I decided to return the filter, but looking at Moparpartsamerica.com, I find that you get 3 days to return a damaged item. It's been a week. That is a very stingy return policy. Won't be using them again if I can help it.

You can pick up a filter at a local parts store for about $30 or Amazon for ca. $26.50. WIX 33647 or NAPA Gold 3647

I would send it back, that plastic X at the bottom of the filter should never come apart..... especially on OEM filters. It is a defect and you should get your money back. Call or send them an email ASAP.
