Chrysler Refuses to Recall 2.7 Million Jeep SUVs

Quote:
In a rare rebuff of the U.S. government, Chrysler Group is refusing a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration request for a recall of 2.7 million SUVs.

The government agency says the gas tank design used in 1993 to 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokees and 2002 to 2007 Jeep Libertys is unsafe.

So what is safier about XJ's,CJ's,YJ's,TJ's,GM pickups/SUV's with rear mounted tanks,or how about Suzuki SUV's?

If your going after one might as well go after every vehicle ever made with a rear mounted gas tank otherwise it's total crap when they passed NHTSA's own safety standards.

According to Clarence Ditlow of the Center for Auto Safety, you are good if you have a fuel tank skid.

How about with a trailer hitch?

Funny they show a liberty burnt along with a G.C. - Both not rear ended. Then looking further they show a toasted Liberty that was rear ended all the way to the rear seats, The only safe place for the gas tank would be the roof..

I think my hitch might have saved me when I was rear ended. A little Honda hit us hard enough to throw the jeep across the center line. The hitch receiver was pulled out of the frame and the gas tank was pushed forward and pressed between the receiver and the axle. The Honda with it's low bumper was totaled and wouldn't even turn over, but the jeep did not even get any body damage except for the plastic bumper and fender. Without the receiver I'm pretty sure the gas tank would have absorbed almost the entire impact and we would have gone out in a blaze of glory.

Still, if we were hit at anything close to highway speed, I don't think the gas tank would have remained intact in the same collision. The bolts holding the receiver in place seemed to be the weak point.

Your chances surviving a accident by getting rear ended at highway speeds is almost zero no matter what vehicle your driving.

What are the bars under the backs of gc and commanders? Are they there to ramp up the gas tank during a rear end collision?

Those are WK's and XK's with mid-mounted gas tanks.

The WK Grand Cherokee and the Commander both shared a common platform where the gas tank is located under the center of the vehicle. The bars probably support the rear unibody, and the spare tire is located between them. The gas tank is behind the rear axle in early versions of the Grand Cherokees, the XJ's, and KJ's.

From what I have read about this, the issue was less about the rear mounted gas tank (as 90% of cars have this nowadays), and more about its proximity to the rear axle. This was the major issue. They also said that when they do the recall they will be solving the problem by adding a hitch to all the Jeep vehicles that qualify. Even if you already have a hitch (aftermarket) they will be removing it and installing a Chrysler Mopar hitch in it's place. In my opinion its not really a solution but...whatever.

Of course I have a CRD so fire is not a major concern but I can say the KJ is one tough vehicle. Here are my "after" pictures from 2008 for my original 05
Image and
Image

The back story is I stopped for a traffic light and the medium size dump truck with 6+ yards of dirt behind me did not. I tried to dodge right, darn turbo lag, and he tried to dodge left. Don't have a clue how many times I spun in the intersection, never left it, but after it was all over no fuel leaks and the engine would crank fine. Of course I suspect his bumper was high enough that it hit my spare tire No personal damage other than a slight bruise where the steering wheel adjustment lever somehow dropped down and whacked my knee.

Nope after market hitch; Draw-Tite if memory serves. Bummer was it only had 16k miles on the odometer but I did manage to get a Limited (original was a Sport) 05 with 26k miles on the odometer for less than Progressive, their insurance not mine, gave me.

Nope. DCJ semi-caved in late June and agreed to recall and do a hitch install or check which was less than the NTSA wanted. How long the recall will take and whether or not it applies to diesel vehicles are unknowns.

You will get a letter when they have the parts, may take many months so you'll just have to wait for your free hitch.
