My 2005 liberty diesel has a code U0146. All other components are working as advertised except... The overdrive is not working and the button you push to turn off the overdrive on and off is not working. Any thoughts on how to trouble shoot and repair this problem. This vehicle has about 160,000 miles on it. Recent repairs include new water pump and a complete timing set and the switchover kit to change the old ceramic glo plugs out and put the new stainless ones in. Any ideas on cause or what to do to fix it. Thanks Jim

according to the code list
Code:
U0146–LOST COMMUNICATION WITH CENTRAL GATEWAY

not sure what that means in real life.

Codes with a U prefix relate to the vehicle's internal data bus. I've had that code a couple of times, and each time it happened, the instrument cluster (which is driven off the bus) went completely dead for a second. It hasn't happened since.

I found this on another forum:

"The 2006 CRDs have a known problem....

The wiring harness for the ECM has the potential to rub on a metal bracket somewhere in the area of the fuel filter which chafes through the wires and cause all sorts of problems including communication problems. The fuel filter was slightly raised to provide more room for the ABS pump and the harness is put under strain. Have a close look around and behind the fuel filter for any harness problems.

Then there is the Gateway Module which is apparently located behind the LH headlamp assembly....check for good connections there."

On this forum as well you will find the description of the 2006 CRD fuel-filter-bracket problem....in the CRD section!

However this is a 2005 CRD so that warning does not apply.....OP needs to post in the CRD Liberty "Love the Torque" section and all will be revealed! :)

Agree with the Gateway Module suggestion!

Thanks very much for your help! I need to check the gateway module behind the drivers side headlight. I have never had problems with the instrument cluster that I am aware of. I should add that this is my wife's vehicle and she doesn't always mention theses things so I will look into that as well. As far as the fuel filter bracket I have looked into that and there is a protective cover around the wiring harness that is there to prevent this sort of wire chafing. I removed the filter bracket and the cover and found no evidence of wire chafing behind the bracket but it is difficult if not impossible to determine what the state of the harness is as it makes the transition thru the firewall. My assumption is that that is not where the problem exists because the instrument cluster has not been problematic. I did find 2 wires that appear to have been pinched against the back of the block or against the bell housing and the insulation has been damaged in the form of a cut and the copper is exposed but it does not appear that the copper was actually cut thru to where the electrical current will not flow thru them. Further investigation is required into this and may prove helpful in the overdrive issue. Thanks again and I will post in " love that torque" about future developments.
