I know most of us wear our seat belts, but I also know some don't.

A good friend of mine happened to not be wearing his Thursday morning on his way to work, hit some black ice, and was in a horrible crash. He was ejected from the vehicle. He was Flight For Life transported to a hospital.

The good news:
He is alive and no brain injuries and the respiratory system as well as the other organs were not harmed. This is nothing short of miraculous.

The Bad:
His left leg will require 2 surgeries to fix the tendon/ ligament damage.

The Worse:
His right leg was so badly injured that, sadly, after 3 surgeries to salvage, it will be amputated above the knee tomorrow morning.

I bring this up only to encourage others to make safe choices. BTW, no other vehicles were involved.

Holy crap. Really sorry about your friend :(

If my brother hadn't been wearing his seatbelt in one accident, he'd likely either be in a persistent vegetative state or dead. So said the state cop and the paramedic who helped him unbuckle and get out of the overturned car without even a scratch.

Wear your seatbelt. Please.

While I wear my seat belt as it's the law and they can pull you over for it I am a firm believer it should be the drivers(and passengers) choice.

Though I despise my mother she would have been killed 16 years ago if she had been wearing her seat belt when she was t-boned by a dump truck. She was ejected, several broken bones(including ribs and jaw) but the dump truck spun out after the impact and the R/R duals ended up in the drivers seat of the car.Had she been belted in she would have been crushed.

My cousin, who I do like, was on a 2 lane highway 12 years ago in the winter and meet a semi that hit a patch of black ice and jack-knifed.He was also on the black ice so couldn't steer let alone brake and bailed out right before the trailer took the top of the cab off the truck.Sure he broke several bones and was in a coma for 6 weeks but lived due to not having his seat belt on.

Both vehicles were pre-airbag vehicles and you should wear your seat belt with a vehicle with airbags but again it should be your choice.

I agree. However I make all passengers buckle up because I don't want anyone hitting me or others in a role over. I believe an individual can do whatever they want if it isn't endangering others. Only draw back to this is the emotional side that family and friends may go through if something happens.

I won't debate the pro/con of legally requiring seat belt use, although I do have a private personal opinion, but I will note that every vehicle I've ever owned had them and I used them including ones I added to a 1965 Mustang fast back and a 1956 MGA both of which I restored.

As to personal experience with seat belt fastened Image. I stopped to red light; medium large dump truck with 6.5 yds of sand did not; I tried to dodge right when I saw he was not stopping and he tried to dodge left both with only tiny success, darn turbo lag; I spun X, no idea how many, times inside the intersection while he had tiny scratch in front bumper. My injury = a nickle size bruise near my left knee which apparently came from hitting the steering column adjustment lever. His injury = none. My purchased brand new 05 CRD Sport was obviously toast at ca. 16k miles.

PS. when I went to the wrecker yard to get personal gear and take pictures just for grins I tried to crank the engine. Fired right up and idled just fine; did not try to put it in gear.

So my experience with seat belts is this: His son and I pulled a fellow off roader, who was not wearing a seat belt, the rest of the way out of his Bronco, after it rolled 4 times and threw him part way out and landed on his head.....

I'll take my chances wearing a seat belt, I won't wheel with others who won't. Everyone in my Jeep wears a seat belt, all the time, it's not their choice.

Still think it should be a personal choice.
Saying that I do wear mine due to its the law, plus had to way before when I drove truck over the road.
Its like motorcycle helmets, I choose never to wear one and will not ride in a state that requires them. It's my choice.
Personal story on seatbelt's, knew a lovely girl who hit a deer and went off the road at about 40 mph, rolled over and ended upside down into a creek with about 18 inches of water it in. She had her belt on, but couldn't get it to release, she drowned hanging there. The Highway Patrol noted that if she wouldn't of had the seat belt on she would of lived since she could of crawled out

Wheeling is one thing where the chances of a rollover is severely increased compared to going to work on Monday morning.

Highway patrol is not a great source of physics knowledge -

If she's driving at 40mph - she has that much kinetic energy - something has to absorb that energy to stop.
with the seat belt - it's the belt and chassis - without the seat belt - it's the skull against a windshield or the the driver ejected out of the vehicle.

the death may be different - but it still death.

The statistics are overwhelming - the odds of surviving a crash are better with a seat belt than without.

Motorcycle helmets the statistics aren't as high - you can crash hard enough to kill yourself and the helmet won't make any difference - although the odds are still on the side of wearing the helmet - and in the states that have relaxed helmet laws - more people have died.
