All,

I have a 2006 Liberty CRD and the Cruise Control does not work -- no dashboard indicators, nothing. I assume that like many steering-wheel mounted CC's there is a clockspring buried back in the steering column and that it is broken. Is this a correct assumption? If it is, how difficult is it to dig back in there and replace it? Is there a workaround for a broken clockspring. If my assumption is not correct about the clockspring, what is the likely problem and how do I repair it?

Thanks,

Dan

The most common cause for the cruise control not working is a bad wheel speed sensor (the 06 has 1 for each wheel on the ground) or an associated bad hub. However, when one or more sensors go bad it's my understanding that some combination of the speedometer and or odometer do not work either.

If that's not it then the clock spring is possible.

I believe that a faulty brake switch also can stop the cruise control from working...it is not just a simple brake light switch but actually has three switches in the one unit. There is also I believe a brake switch at the brake master cylinder which compares its output to the main brake switch and disables cruise control if faulty.

I doubt your Clockspring has gone faulty but it is a possibility.

You can download the Service Manuals for your KJ at the link supplied in the CRD sections "Sams Noob Guide"

Papaindigo -- Speedo and odo are working fine, so I guess that the bad wheel sensor option is out.

Billwill -- What other symptoms might come with a faulty brake switch?

As I stated the brake switch has three switches inside it...one (normally open) to turn the rear brake lights ON.(White/Tan and Gray/Red wires)

One normally closed which opens when you press the brake pedal to kill the Cruise control (Violet White and Violet/Yellow wires.

And finally a normally closed switch (Dark Green/White and Black) which has something to do with ABS.

You can try measure these positions with an Ohm meter with the brake pedal relaxed and then with the pedal pressed.
Do not remove the brakes switch while testing....according to the manual once it is removed it cannot be put back in place...a new one is needed.

On my LR3 when the cruise quit it was deemed the clockspring by the dealer.

one of the best pieces of advice i received from this forum was the cure for my cruise not functioning. i had the cruise activated on by the dealer. three reasons for this= never activated, lost activation due to ecm reflash. dead battery for prolonged period. i am guessing mine was due to the dead battery as the libby sat for a chwile. so happy it works-stealer ship was choked-
