So I'm fairly new to the forum but have had the jeep for a little bit and have been playing around with it to see what she likes best. Lately I've been trying out turning O/D off to see how she runs when I go back and forth to work in the city (at or below 55km/h or 35mph the whole time). I've been into cars for a while and even as a kid talked to my dad all the time when we were towing our trailer asking him questions and stuff. Also, I get a little bored driving an auto so I tend to start pushing buttons :-)r ...

Anyways, I've read a lot of posts saying to only turn O/D off if you are towing...which is true, though there are a few (wise) people who say they turn it off around town. Some people seem to think that you will kill your mpg if you do so because you are essentially eliminating a gear. BUT, I can vouch for the fact that in my '02 liberty 4x4 auto that I went from around 16-18mpg with O/D on, to 22-23.5mpg with it turned off...on fairly flat ground, with 4-5 stops and starts on my route. Now this could be a result of my route so it may not be the same for you...

Moral of the story, if you are driving around town, a fairly significant fuel savings can be had from simply pressing that little button on your shifter...no money spent on fancy/worthless fuel economy gadgets. This makes sense too because your tranny won't be switching between gears as much, and you are driving around closer to the RPM "sweet spot". I also took the time this morning to figure out that it will save me ~$5-700/year if I do this...depending on how heavy my foot is some days....

Been doing the same thing since 2004, under 55 , on two lane roads, city driving etc, OD is always switched off . KJ doesn't hunt for the right gear that way etc

:!: I was under the impression you should never turn o/d off unless towing (as needed). Thanks lostjeeps for yet another grain of knowledge

I always run that way, @ 45-50 mph, with 32s and 4.10s I can pull 22-23 MPG all day long, do the same with the OD off and it shifts back and forth, lugs down and gets 18-19
Puts the engine more in the sweet spot where it likes to run

A KK doesn't have the same O/D off button.
Would this be the equivalent to the Tow/Haul switch?
I do a lot of driving around that annoying speed of 35-40 mph and would love if this could work for me, too.

I think it is the same thing...i think it also adjusts shift points on newer vehicles to higher RPMs...anyone else know specifically for the KK?

I could always use my Scangauge2 to see what my mileage shows when using Tow/Haul.

Let me know how this goes, I do a ton of driving in the same speed and wouldn’t mind a few MPG back

Hey, buddy. Back in Jersey? I will let you know. If I go out tonight, I'll be on a 35 mph road and 40 mph road. I'll test both of those as accurately as I can.

I used the tow/haul switch a few times. Mileage isn't any better when using it even at lower speeds. Sometimes it would spike high for a few seconds...

Didn’t see this til now. I think I was back the week before. Will be back late May, we may need to do a NJ/PA meet up...?

Bummed to hear that it didn’t do much though.

I do have to say I have been much more brisk on the throttle lately and my ScanGauge2 has been showing higher numbers than usual. Probably cuz I cleaned some of the cobwebs out. I hope this tank is better than last tank. :JEEPIN:

I’ll be in the Flemington, NJ / New Hope, PA area for June and July. Moving to northern VA at end of July for a year (for work). Still can’t afford to spend the cash on skids and I’m hoping that, once I’m out of school and working full time, that I can. I’ll be back in the area periodically though

Tom -- if you come out to the eastern PA area, I’d definitely do that! Would be cool to get a big LOST group to Rausch with the legend himself :?:

Lost rausch creek would be cool. I have 2-3(maybe more who knows) other friends that want to make a trip there this summer. If you guys do make a meet &greet in NJ or PA keep me posted. Depending on the area it's not too far of a drive from LI.
