Well I went to start my KJ today and heard a pop with no start. The I had power but when I turned my key it just turned like the was nothing inside the ignition. I tore it apart and found that my ignition actuator switch pin is broken. I should be back on the road once my part comes in. Who knew a little piece of metal can dead line your rig.

Ok so I replaced my actuator pin with no problems but my jeep won't start. It will start and then die after a few seconds but now it will not even crank. I noticed the the security light stays on now as well. I did some research but all I can find is that there is a problem with the electrical system. Do any of you know how to fix this? I would hate to have to take it in but its looking like I'm going to have to. Any thoughts on how much it would cost to fix this issue?

If the SKIS light flashes at you it means the PCM has not recognised the SKIM code being sent to it by the SKIM module that reads the code off the chip in the key. It normally lets you turn over the engine and will start and run a few seconds before cutting out.

If the SKIS light stays on solid it normally lets you turn the engine over but does not fire. This happens when the PCM is happy with the SKIM code it has received from the SKIM module, the PCM energizes the ASD Relay and expects to get confirmation back from the ASD Relay that it...the ASD Relay....has energized.

I had a problem where the one wire going to the ASD Relay field coils had broken so although the PCM (ECM for my CRD) had sent the signal for the ASD Relay to energize...the signal did not get to the ASD relay field coil so the engine would turn over but not fire and the SKIS light stayed on solid. I got the Jeep going by jumping pins 30 and 87 in the ASD Relay socket together so the ECM was able to get the return signal from the ASD relay that it had energized.

I eventually found the broken wire.

So if you have the SKIS light on solid....check if the ASD relay is energizing and is putting voltage through pins 30 and 87....you can try swap the ASD relay with an identical one, such as the blower motor relay, I believe.

The fact that your Jeep did crank at first but now does not even do that would indicate a bad/flat battery or dirty battery terminals, ground strap or engine to chassis grounding strap. Check fuse 8 (40 A) in the fuse box under the hood.

If you put the Jeep into Park and have ignition ON...you can remove the Starter Relay and briefly jumper pins 30 and 87 in the Starter relay together. If it now turns over it means your ignition switch/actuator pin has stopped working or the Park/Neutral interlocks are faulty...try start in Neutral mode instead of Park.

Your new actuator pin may have broken...remove the ignition switch from the actuator pin and with the key in the ignition..to enable SKIS....turn the ignition switch with a small flat screwdriver to see if it starts.

So assuming you can get the engine to turn over again, you could try jumper pins 30 and 87 together in the ASD relay socket and see if it runs but first keep a voltmeter over the battery to see what the voltage is doing....there is a Jeep owner on one of these Forums who can get his Jeep to run by jumpering the ASD relay pins but the voltage over the battery quickly rises to 10 volts and burns out the battery.
