Post subject:  Ramifications of taking stock liberty to sand dunes

Alrighty, so what kind of damages would I be looking at here if I took my 06 stock sport liberty to silver lake sand dunes? Can anybody give me a best case and a worst case scenario?

Also, I am leasing the vehicle (with plans to purchase at end); so does this void any warranties? I wouldn't want to have to go in for service some time after the dunes and have them tell me since they found sand in some small location that they woundn't work on it.

So if anybody has any insight or wisdom to share Im all ears.

Thanks

you should be fine

hose off completely after the sand
drop tire psi to around 18ish
bring a shovel
bring a tow strap/chain
bring 2 12"x12" pieces of wood to put onder the tires if you get stuck
have tow hooks in case u get stuck
make sure you have your jack

have fun

All of that and check to make sure the air box is good and tight. Mine is alittle messed up so I check it from time to time. Also, if you have the K&N I would get a good paper filter for just this trip. That would make me feel alot better about my engine.

When you speak of damages this occurs with not paying attention (stupid driving). Take your time going through the different hills and if you feel uncomfortable doing something, don't do it. While your there do the Test Hill, it's the first hill in the beginning.

You'll be fine though and you will have a blast! There are always plenty of stock vehicles there, just people enjoying the sand and getting to drive along a beach (Lake Michigan).

Oh!! Don't forget! Take photos, lots of them and post them here when your back. Don't forget to go to the Ice Cream store off the main road (close to the minature golf/go kart place).

Have Fun!!!

While you are unlikely to do damage, there is always a chance of getting stuck. You may want to invest in some tow straps and tow hooks (that is, if you do not already have tow hooks.) You can take the hooks off at the end of lease.

I did my grad studies at MTU!!! what a nice surprise to hear from someone at MTU. I really miss Houghton's surroundings off-road. Did the snow melted already? :)

I remember doing a lot of exploring in da UP it has endless networks of abandoned loggin roads in the woods, river crossings, beaver ponds crossing, etc. I had the oportunity of watching black bears an moose...

Cheers

The worst that can happen is you get stuck. Try it. We've all done it.

Post subject:  Hey

I actually just got back from silver lake, my second time in my liberty... the first time was no damage, but this time i cracked my front bumper, busted a fog light, slid backwards down a hill and missed a tree trunk on my driver side by about 4 inches.. (got all the branches from it tho)
you can go there and easily not get damaged... its just a matter of the risks you are willing to take... do NOT go unless you have front AND rear tow points though, and bring a tow strap if you have one... plus the jack and wood to put the jack on incase you have to change your spare... i would recommend no less than 15, but no more than 18psi...

your liberty will do fine, take it up test hill, (first big directional hill on the left once you enter) ... the more risks you take, the more damage chance you will have... but like i said, it is easy to go there and not get damaged...

I was staioned in the UP at Calumet Air Force station in the early 70's. I don't miss the snow at all. If you get a chance to visit there again is a memorial to a missile testing site on the tip of the UP that should be accessable by Jeep. I can't seem to finfd the url for the web site with specifics. The following is the directions I was given "You can drive in off the end of HIghway 41 if you have a lot of patience, as the road is very bumpy with occasional washouts which take carefully negotiation. The large road to the left toward Horseshoe Harbor is pretty evident as there isn't another large left branch until the end of the road. That one you probably need to bike or walk, unless you have a sturdy, high draft vehicle and take your time. There is a good sized left branch that takes you right to the site (about a mile). " We are hoping to get back up there this summer.and find this place.

Before i was in the navy we raced quads in the dunes every weekend. Take jugs of water with you, and if you start spinning... Just stop before you bury it and pour water under your tires. It works like a champ. Your jeep will drive right out. LOL, i've seen it work on everything from escalades to kawasaki mules at Little Sahara in Oklahoma.
