Post subject:  Bumper(fog) and Roof lights install help

Hi

Last week I received 4 Hella 500 spot/driving lights and 2 Hella 500 lights that I bought from a guy on Kijiji. They are supposed to be almost new (just one month of use) but after installing them and checking all the relays and fuses I'm thinking he might have used them for a little longer, nonetheless they are in top shape and with little use.

This past weekend I started installing the fog lights since they where only two lights and easier to install. everything went well (or so I think) everything was already assembled (since the previous owner already had them installed) All I had to do was connect/weld the cables, wire and install the switch.

here's a diagram of what I did:

I then embarked on the adventure of fabricate/mount and wire 4 spot lights on the roof and wire all to 1 switch. ( I read many post in here on how to do that since I'm no electrician but I'm a DIY kind of person so I always read/try/learn :D ) anyways Everything was good until I turn on the switch and the lights didn't work :banghead: I remembered i read somewhere that almost every single time the problem is the ground so I checked and indeed the ground was the problem. I originally grounded the 4 spots together to a bolt that holds the Jeep side rails inside the plastic covers. I put washers in between for better ground but nothing worked. It was getting late so instead of trying different places I just wired the ground all the way to the engine bay by the firewall besides the relays. at first only 2 spot lights work so I imagine the problem was the second relay. I unplugged and plug back the relay and all 4 lights were on :frankie:
Victory eh!!

well not really i went for a 2hr drive and now only 2 lights work. I check the relay again and nothing. check the cables, nothing so I wonder what could be the problem.

This is a diagram of how i install them:

My questions are:

1. are they wired properly? did I missed something?
2. are the fuses the right ones? should I change them? and if so, what should I buy?
3. I had the 4 spot lights on for about 5-10min and it drained my battery. (normal or bad wiring/fuses?
4. has anyone connected their roof lights to the instrument panel so that the (renegade) roof lights symbol/light goes one when you turn them on? if so, how can i do that?
5. Is it possible to connect the hella lights so if i leave them on by accident the liberty will beep just as it does with the headlights/fogs?

Thanks
A

and here is how it looks :

I've done a bit of wiring, but for my CB and inverter, rather than roof lights. I see a couple of potential things in your diagrams that may be causing your issues.

Fogs:
Does the switch actually have a ground? It usually has two tabs, power in and out. If it has 3 tabs, it may be a 2 position switch (on 1, on 2, off).

Roof lights:
Same deal with the switch. No need for two power lines to the switch, as one is all it needs.
If it is a two-position switch, maybe you can make the first click turn on the middle two lights that face forward, and the second click turn all four lights on (light straight ahead from the center as well as the outside lights angled to the sides a bit). Or you could set it up so one relay & switch does the middle lights, the second relay and a second switch independently turn on the outside lights.
Both relays need to be grounded.
I wouldn't use two different amperage fuses (15 for one bank of lights and 20 for the other). Your 55 watt bulbs draw 4.6 amps each at 12 volts, so you would need a higher amp fuse if you ran all 4 from the same relay. 15 amp fuse should be fine for 2 lights.

Here is a wiring diagram for fogs and driving lights that may be helpful.

Is your switch grounding both the relays to close the contacts or supplying 12v dc to activate the relays?
Most lamp relays have 4 terminals 30----87 for supplying the 12v dc to the lights, and 85----86 to activate or close the relay contacts. You can use either the 12v feed or the ground feed to do the switching of the relay as either will work. If your switch has an indicator light, it gets a little more complicated....
Simple relay diagram, simply double for four lights:

Thanks for your help Ifhoward and WWDiesel.

Both switches have indicator light. The green one (roof lights) lights when is on even with only 2 of the 4 lights working. the indicator light on the red one (fogs) doesn't work. I have an extra green switch from the second set of roof light so I swap them and still no indicator light but the fog lights do work. both switches are grounded to the same bolt under the dash.

the switches have 3 tabs 1(battery) 2(relay) 3(ground) and only 2 positions (on-off)

i checked last night and I found a broken fuse on the green cable going into the switch from the battery but since there are two green cables coming from the battery to the switch, the same 2 roof lights are on as long as one of the green cables has a fuse.

I checked both relays and they work(click)

Tomorrow I'm buying 15A fuses and I'm changing all the fuses.

The reason why I'm using two relays instead of one is because they came with the hella kits so I figured I'll wire each kit independently and just use 1 switch to turn on the 4 lights.

I also bought a multimeter, maybe I can find the problem faster this way... now I need to remember how to use it

Makes total sense! The switch ground is for the little LED in the switch. I forgot that switches can have a little light in them.
