Was airing down my tires to go on the bus and saw what looked like splitting in raised rubber lettering on the sidewall and cracking around the lugs in the tread. The tires i currently have are 235/70r16 general grabber at2. Ill post pictures when i get home.

Check to see when tires were built , they maybe old and starting to dry rot

Didn't even think of checking that. When I did get them the Mechanic said they were new and were no where near the end if their shelf life. But then again he's been wrong on stuff

And this where it is splitting on the letters. Probably just cosmetic but the tires have been on for roughly 20k miles and the jeep gets driving to vermont from long island every weekend

And these were a lot bigger looking at 15 psi.

On the backside of the tires ( near the rim) look for the DOT numbers, after that will be a stamped in set of letters and numbers.
The numbers tell what week and year your tires were made.
For example 2402 would be the 24th week of 2002, 0914 would be the 9th week of 2014

Looks like the 38th week of 12(according to what Tom said). That puts them about the middle of September 2012. The tires should still be good. You figure most tires will last 3-4 years with an average amount of driving. I know that kind of mileage will usually wear a tire out before it goes bad.

Wait where'd your post go? lol

Only 2 years old the "cracking" is nothing to worry about. Keeping an eye on the tire build date is worth doing as I've seen 6+ year old tires passed off as "new" which they definitely are not. Generally speaking tire life measured in years not miles is about 10 years from the build date which translates into if your tires are 10+ years old you a) should start thinking about replacement regardless of mileage and b) at minimum do regular inspection of the sidewalls looking for cracking, especially up near the shoulder, that runs parallel to the rim.
