So today, I decided to heavily tackle taking off my skids, rock rails and clean them and sand and paint etc.

Once I got my trans pan off, oil everywhere. the bottom of my trans pan is all rusted out from living in Chicago from road salt.

So my question is, should i just scrape off all the rusted paint and clean it off (would it be ok?)

Or is it time to get a replacement pan, and if I get a replacement OEM pan, do I just drop the pan and add what oil I lost from dropping and adding a new pan?

It's not clear what's rusted. The trans pan skid or the trans fluid pan itself.

If it's the skid and it's still solid just clean and repaint.

If it's the trans fluid pan and it's rusted enough to be leaking then it's gone and needs to be replaced. OEM or after market your call. Either way figure on doing a full tranny fluid and filter change by the book.

If the trans pan has only surface rust, just clean and reuse. Spend the money on ATF and a good filter.

Yea I went ahead with the aluminum aftermarket for my 42 trans. New filter as well. I had trans fluid changed a year ago...should I still do a full swap or just add what I lost?
