After debating multiple ideas about added factory fog lights or buying after market ones, I decided that I want something after market or custom. I shy away from the factory ones because I heard lower is better, so I want to mount something really low. Am I correct in understanding this properly. I also don't know what color to get. I heard amber is better, but every where has different "amber." OEM ones are usually more yellow, and companies like vision x and rigids are more orange. Which is better for fog and snow and stuff like that?

I run Putco Jet Yellow bulbs in my factory fog light housing and they work great.
Not sure of hard evidence, but I've always heard yellow cuts fog the best.

True fog lights produce a fairly wide beam directed low along the ground (the direction of the beam is mostly controlled by alignment of the beam and not how low the light is mounted although fog lights are typically mounted lower than the normal headlights). Color is typically white or yellow with some suggestion that yellow is good because the wave length of the light. That said:
1. direction of the beam is more important than color from a function perspective as low and wide produces less light dispersion (e.g. light reflected around as it passes thru water vapor or drops). This is why you can see better with regular low beams rather than regular high beams in fog.
2. I've used and not used fog lights both white and colored and personally don't find them to be much use as a practical matter simply because they don't penetrate fog well enough to safely increase your driving speed over what is practical with regular low beams.

I have seen a fair increase in visibility. My fog lights on my other car help dramatically in the show but they are white. I've never had any experience with yellow or orange.

Based on my experience the yellow/amber fog lights work better during heavy fog. They work great also on rainy conditions.

I mounted PIAA 510 ION Crystal driving lights to my bumper (see my profile pic) and they worked really well. Just be sure to aim them properly (reference the Daniel Stern website - http://www.danielsternlighting.com/) and they will give you fantastic results. Aimed improperly and they won't work as designed and will possibly piss off oncoming traffic.
