Anyway, i have had a air bag light on my 02 KJ. Several people have looked at it. I was doing some "mods" and noticed a wire that looked like it rubbed on a bracket near the brake pedal. It was rubbed all the way thru and pretty sure shorted out. Anyone know what this wire is for? Its a solid light blue wire.

no idea what the blue one is. here's your options, liquid tape the wire or solder it back on and heat shrink the affected. after either of those are done sleeve the loom and tape the sleeve every 6 or so inches to further prevent shorting out. verify all fuses are still in working order after this fix. |

Its a solid light blue wire. ![]() Solid light blue wire is actually picks up ground from the airbag module and goes to the seat belt switches...ground then gets switched back to the airbag module to let it know the seat belts are latched...it returns to the airbag control module via a Gray or Dark Green wire. So I cannot see how this could cause a problem unless this light blue wire has welded itself to another wire nearby...your picture seems to show some other damaged wires in the harness. So this light blue wire should go to ground in any case....no harm in you grounding it yourself to a clean chassis point somewhere and see if things change....I doubt it... but you need to trace this wire and see if it is indeed at ground as it should be or at some weird DC value which means it is rubbing on another wire in that area. You need to undo the harness in that area and look for other wires frayed or shorted and if need be cut off both ends of the light blue wire and replace it with a new wire You need to download the 2002 Service Manual here....includes the circuit diagram...the page you want to start off with is 8WA-43-3 in the wiring diagram. I also know that on my Export RHD CRD the wires coming from the Driver airbag via the clockspring goes into a connector...about 5 wires I believe. When this connector is pulled apart there is a flat metal plate inside the connector on the airbag side that flips up and shorts the 5 wires together....this is to stop any back EMF getting to the airbag and setting it off so be wary of what readings you get when you pull connectors apart. Best/safest thing when working around airbags is to disconnect the battery and let the Jeep stand for a while with Red Battery lead touching on chassis for any capacitors to discharge and the do your measurements with power disconnected and using an Ohm meter! All of the other wires are fine. Found a white wire that was rubbed a bit. But every other wire was fine. So if i connect this wire my light should turn off? |

Yeah I noticed that spot on the white wire...check your fuses inside the cabin and under the hood as this wire may have touched ground and blown a fuse...I will see if I can find this White Wire in the circuit diagrams! First disconnect battery as stated and measure with an Ohm meter that this light blue wire goes to Ground and nowhere else....then you could try connect the blue wire up again and see what happens....seems to me that this blue wire is is only there to sense the seat belts are latched so as to know if the belts need to be tensioned in case of an impact...I don't believe the early KJs had sensors in the passengar seat to sense if there was a passenger present You may need to pull codes to see which air bag it is complaining about...I know my Export model has Driver and passenger front bags and curtain airbags! I have seen on other KJ forums that a new TSB has been posted to fix 2002 airbag problems...the first fix they issued for this problem did not work so this new one may help implementing...maybe the Dealers find/fix your problem while doing this! |

I already had the TSB done for the airbags last week, they had "no idea" why its on, which means they didn't scan the computer. I connected the two tires and fixed the white wire. My factory seats didnt have sensors in the seats, just the buckle latch wires. Checked all my fuses and none are blown. I left the battery disconnected while im out right now on the ambulance. So tonight when i get back i will reconnect it and see if it clears the light. This light has been on since I've owned the KJ, i need to get a scanner on it to see what the computer says but its a $90 fee. Crazy. |
