Well, the ol' Libby has over 50,000 miles under her hood, so I'm thinking some replacement parts may be in order soon. I'm thinking that the catalytic converter could go any day now, so why not replace it with a high flow version from Random Technology or Magnaflow, right? It will compliment the headers I have on order and the existing freeflow muffler. My question is: How many, if any, oxygen sensors does the Liberty have at the catalytic? Thanks for any info!

The Liberty has 3 CC's. 2 mini's, 1 off each exhaust manifold, and 1 main in the normal place. There are 4 OS's, 1 upstream from each mini CC, and one downstrean form each mini CC. There are no OS's around the big main CC, so you could choose any brand replacement you like.

WHOA WHOA don't do anything with you cats yet wait till 80k. At 80k the emissions warr. runs out. Those cat. con.'s are expensive as all get out. I'm not sure if that is all states or not but I know how that is in MO. Just like pcm flashes shouldn't cost you till 80k either that falls under powertrain warr. Just something to think about.

'preciate all the feedback so far. I know in some states it is illegal to swap out the catalytic until it dies, but right now with gas prices, I'm trying anything to get the best mileage out of the ol' gal as possible. I'm really not too concerned about warranty issues, call me a fool, but I don't take much stock in them. Nine times out of ten I've tried claiming something under warranty, I've been told it was my fault (and it wasn't) or the old "that part isn't covered but the two components on either side of it are, etc." scam that the dealers like to pull. Please excuse my bitterness. I appreciate your concern though, and thank you for mentioning it. Looking at that diagram, I'm rather concerned about the ease of header installation even if JBA says they are "bolt-on", cuz I'm a "Do-it-myself-even-though-I-Have-no-F*ing-clue-what-I'm-doing" kind of guy. So perhaps in the near future I'll be posting something akin to "HELP - I have my entire exhaust pulled apart and I have to be to work in 3 hours!" Hmmmm, well I do have until the end of June to cancel my order if it looks like it's going to be a lot more expensive than I anticipated. By the way, I got a note back from Autoanything stating that the JBA headers are on backorder by the manufacturer until June 19 - this is the expected shipping date they gave me. Thaks again for all the feedback - keep it coming!

Kind of off topic but: I have an 02 (3 Cats!) and I want to get the JBA Headers. I am basically replacing my whole exhaust system (except that I have a Flowy 40 Series already). How many cats do I have to order? 2 or 3? I am getting Magnaflow cats. Is there a possiblilty that I could go to 3" I.D. pipes instead of 2.5"?

Don't know if ya want to go with 3" pipes. If I remember correctly the 3.7 needs higher backpressure to produce the low end torque. Get a 2nd opinion but I seem to remember hearing something about that.

You know Savage, it seems we have more in common than just our Login names, you have the same kind of plans and the same general mentality, except you seem to be slightly better funded :D Please let us know how the headers work out, i'm more than slightly interested in picking up a set, but i too am concerned about cats. I'd love to do the entire system, headers, cat(s) (wanna go down to 1), muffler and intake(but retain the stock box)

Yeah, me too, changed my gear oil like that, same with the spark plugs, engine oil, lift, stereo etc. I'm a very hands on learner, i'd much rather learn as i go than try to remember everything

Amen SavageSS27. I'm glad I'm not the only dumb-ass that likes to dive into something new with wild abandon  I agree, though. I learn much better when I do it myself as opposed to reading a book or watching someone do it! If you have not already, check out my poll on interest in the headers - I'm trying to see if there is enough to try and get a group buy organized.

Can I replace the OEM catalytic converter on my car with a "high flow" catalytic converter?

The catalytic converter plays a major role in the emissions reduction of a motor vehicle. The vehicle manufacturer has matched a specific catalytic converter to the vehicle to minimize emissions output. Both CARB and the EPA do not allow the replacement of a catalytic converter with non-exempt "high flow" performance replacement unit. In fact, it is technically not legal to even replace a converter unless it has been proven by technician to have failed(its Federal not state), and then it can only be replaced with an exempt OEM equivalent unit. (However, enforcement of this requirement is almost non-existent and is the primary loop-hole that allows the usage of so-called "high flow" catalytic converters. Many of these units are sold with the disclaimer as being a "race" component and are not intended for street use.) Due to the hundreds of vehicle models produced over the years, it is virtually impossible to determine by glancing under a car whether the converter is the original unit, a legal OEM replacement, or a non-legal aftermarket "high flow" performance unit. Unless CARB or the EPA decide to take more aggressive enforcement action, the installation and usage of these non-exempt "high flow" catalytic converters will likely continue.

So how much are the headers? What is the power increase supposed to be? I can not wait to hear what they sound like.

Alright. So now the final question. How many cats do I need to replace? I noticed that I have 2 Smaller cats at the end of the headers and 1 large cat just before the muffler. Can anyone with a 03 or later KJ look and see where their cats are located? Thanks!
