That's just the production name. Much like a Cherokee was an XJ and the Wranglers a TJ. Its just sort of Jeep tradition for each new model that comes out.

Until they wanted to reuse K and made the 07 Wrangler the JK, which is reverse to standard Jeep naming convention. And then got rid of the J completely with the Commander, the XK. :)
