In California the poster want 11,999 is that the norm?

KBB and Nada list high at 10,500.

Going to look at it tomorrow, any words or advice ... I will ask all the normal questions

Maintenance

No it's not the norm

KBB is still a reasonable reference

there are some places that go higher - I think Oregon has readily available Biodiesel and lots of interest in Diesel in general

Calif - never had new CRD's - they couldn't sell them there - so very limited supply might push up prices.

and a general caveat - the biggest issue from day one has been a lack of trained mechanics - the dealerships got a 45min video - and that was the only diesel they had at the time - and again - they never sold them in California.

my point is

the odds of the timing belt being done by a qualified mechanic - is low - there are problems that occur when the belt is done incorrectly

running rough- stumbling - smoking - indications they messed up something

it's also a bit strange to change a timing belt and then sell - it's very common to sell because the belt change is due.

a mechanic will easily charge $1000 to do the job - maybe they added that to the price?

also to the lack of mechanics - if you're comfortable working on engines - it's not that much different - a few idiosyncrasies

but if you're paying someone else to learn - it gets expensive fast.

yeah, the CA premium is usually $1K or more on vehicles in that price range. So, if it's really nice, and they can show proof that the timing belt is newish, then it may not be a bad price. Or, you can pay $1500 less for one out of state that you can't inspect, and the shipping cost eats up the discount :jester:

You might be best to buy one from a lost member that Geordi or someone else reliable has maintained so there's less of a gamble, and you might even get the essential ARP head studs included :2cents:

I am experiencing the same problem locating options in California as I did when I wanted a used TDI jetta wagon(I gave up). Hard to find one in good shape, when I did they wanted only a few thousand off of new.

There is a CRD listed in the market place here on Lost Jeep, however the motor needs to be gone over and maybe a turbo. I just don't know if I have the energy or drive to rebuild and chase gremlins. I don't mind wrenching, I ran my last TDI into the ground with close to 400k on the chasis.

Car max has an 05 listed some where back east for 16k plus transfer fee. I am currently driving a Honda CRV into the ground on my daily commute of 90 miles round trip.

Long story short I need a capable 4x4 that can haul my hang gliders and dirt bike while getting decent MPG. The KJ would be a nice fit.

I do travel to NM and Utah often maybe I can find one during my travels and drive it back to Cali

Thanks for the input!

Check the for sale section again. There is one listed in Nevada.
Its a bit more $$$ but its fully loaded with suspension upgrades and proper maintenance.

Thanks Flash ... Im hoping I can get some pics of the NV Las Vegas rig. Keeping in mind the KJ I buy will be used for a 90 mile daily commute. I dont need a serious wheeler, just something able to haul me and my Hang gliders up some occasional mountains(4x4 only 70% of the time) and get me to work.

About that 05 with 104k for 11,999.

Very clean inside and out, no salt rash and very little signs of cosmetic use. The drivers seat was the only item that showed signs of wear for a vehicle this age. Clean carfax and all receipts from a local euro car mechanic for the TB and pulleys.

The seller was forward he purchased the KJ to recondition and flip. The thing that was a little bit of a gut check was the constant statement of how at the price he has it listed, he is losing a 2k.

Some things I need some help with ...

Idle was fine, a little loud in the cab. A little more vibration than what I would expect. Norm ? Maybe time for new motor mounts.

The trans or drive line has a whine, I don't think it was the turbo. Shifted well with no issues. Concern ?

My only issue with this deal ...

I asked him to put the rig into 4 low, which he did no problems. However getting the trans case out of 4 low was a bit of a labor.

placed into 4 low drove around for a bit no nasty noise or clunking. came to a complete stop, placed trans in neutral and tried to get the thing back into 2 high.

The guy struggled a little bit to get the thing back into 2 high. That is the one and only thing sticking in my mind making me want to run away and not make an offer.

again all stock he wont budge from 12k, the only way I would do that is have a third party trans shop verify trans and trans case are good.

What you all think

Is there any fluid in the overflow (lower right hand chamber) of the coolant tank? The biggest problem with these is that the head gasket is often already toast, and then some just dump it on someone else. You really won't know until you drive them hundreds of miles and notice that it's consuming fluid slowly, or fast... The overflow may have fluid in it if it's a fast leak.
I just pull the top and install the head studs in all of them (and do rockers if they aren't like new). If you catch it early, you won't have twice the job of pulling the head and replacing the head gasket. Sometimes it takes out the $2,000 head also.
