| Post subject: | replaced brake line.... |
I had to replace a right front brake line...I had to replace the left front last winter...The factory brake lines rust where the hard line, from the caliper, joins a section of soft line...the left side was no problem...replaced the line, bled the brakes...done....Now this right side has been a different story...when I went to bleed the brakes, I can't get any fluid to come out of the bleeder...nothing...Now, just so everyone has all the details...I put Dorman (?) speed bleeder valves on the front calipers when I replaced the left side brake line...I thought "Wow! These are wonderful...crack the valve open...slide a piece of hose over the valve, pump the pedal, close the valve, done!" I bleed the rear brakes, working from the right rear, left rear, then moved up to the front right...nothing...The pedal seems to have pressure, but when I pump the pedal, no fluid coming out of the valve, and the fluid level in master cylinder doesn't move...At that point I wondered if starting the Jeep, having vacuum on the brake booster would have any affect....BRAKE light is on...same deal, no fluid from the valve...I even resorted to trying a vacuum brake bleeder...still nothing....Is this gonna be a tow my Jeep to the dealership to have the ABS system bleed through use of Starscan??? Any help, hints, tricks etc. would be appreciated....Casey |

Get somebody to help you, crack flex hose joint to WC while assistant presses brake pedal. If fluid comes out under pressure, your fancy bleeder's probably fubared. Matter of fact, remove bleeder, hold finger (with a glove on if you're afraid of getting your hands messy) over bleeder hole lightly while assistant pumps pedal. Fingertip acts as a check valve for quick and messy bleed. No fluid either way? crack line into flex hose, see if fluid comes out under pressure. Keep bleeding upstream till you find issue/restriction. Bob |

Well Bob, I gotta say, you were right! My first thought when I read your response was "No way." but sure enough those "fancy" bleeders were the problem! It's definitely a relief to find that out...Oh, and the brake light...This one makes me feel real dumb...but I'm one who will admit to his mistakes....The Jeep is up on a jack stand...the wheels are chocked, and THE PARKING BRAKE IS ON!!!....It's a good safety practice, and in my haste, I didn't even think of that...It had been a long day at work, I'd tried to beat sunset....I didn't...I thought it was gonna be a simple, bolt new line on, bleed brakes procedure....turns out something (speed bleeders) that I thought made something more simple, actually made it more complicated...Don't get me wrong...they worked great when new....maybe they corroded and the check valve is now stuck...I don't know...Just think, I thought about getting speed bleeders for my other Jeep and my motorcycle...Probably a good thing I didn't. I guess sometimes we all have to have someone point out the obvious, that we might have overlooked..Thanks!! |
