Post subject:  Oil change costs? Synthetic and others.....

I am curious how much $$ people are paying for their oil changes. How much is a complete oil service for your vehicles (Jeep & non-Jeep)? I am interested in hearing from those that change it themselves And those that take it to a dealer or shop.

Please note what kind of oil you use and how often (miles or months) you have it changed.
edit:
Prefer to hear from those that don't get their oil changed for Free. Though if you do, How can anyone beat that?!?!

Thanks for any info.

we get ours changed for FREE at the dealer
we got in on the free oilchanges for something like 5 years
they put in 10W30 but i am not sure what brand
the big advantage i think is that with the 7/70k waranty there will be no question about internal engine repair and as ong as you have the bumper to bumper 3/36k they have to fix every squeek when you bring it in and they keep all the reords no questins as to
"improper maintenace"

just for future reference Mopar dealers oil is supplied by Mobil 1. I use Mobil 1 full syn. and still change it every 3k. I know I could go longer without worrying about the oil breaking down but I figure with all the wheeling I do that oil filter can't or wont last 6k with out getting at least parts of it clogged with gunk. Just my .02

i do hope you have the 10W30 in there in the summer and the 5W30 in the winter
i live in south LA and we dont have a winter but in the summer 10W30 will get so hot and thin that when you pull out the dip stick from a hot engine the oil just runs off and my brother started putting 10W40 in his YJ because with the 10W30 it tends to burn a lot
(get real dark) thow it has over 120K and is a 4.0 I6 cyl so it runs hotter

I love that I don't have to worry about that w/ Amsoil! And I live in the Mojave Desert!

$19 for a 5 quart jug of Castrol Syntec or Mobil 1 full synthetic at wal-mart
$10 for K&N Oil Filter

$29 bucks. Of course, I spill it all over the driveway each and every time, so you may need to factor in the price for degreaser and kitty litter too...

$20 for 5quarts of Mobil 1 syn and $8 for a pureone purolator filter every 3k miles. Ive went up to 6 months before I hit the 3k miles, I drive it alot but just around town. Its a small town too.

I'm not a believer is the whole good oil vs bad oil thing. I buy the cheapest 10W-30 oil along with the cheapest oil filter I can - both of which happen to be from Wal-Mart.

5qt oil = $9.00
filter = $2.50

total $11.50

last time i used valvoline durablend 5w30. I will use any synthetic blend that is on sale. Mobil 5000 or 7500, castrol.

$17-19 = 5 qts. of oil
$4.00 = fram oil filter (ph3600)

total = around $25

1/2 of a Case of Amsoil 5W30 @ $60.60 a case (so $30.30 a change)
1 EaO filter @ $13.00
1 Change a year

So for 12 months of oil changes in my KJ i spend $43! Now someone beat that price!

edit: BTW, I know where you are going with this JJ 8)

If you have never seen the inside of an old set of heads then this would be fine. But I have seen the crude that standard oil and a cheap oil filter can leave behind after time.

I would rather have the insurance of Mobil 1 syn ($22 at Cosco) and delar only oil filter ($6 I think).

Every Mfg says their's is the best oil. So I've used most major brands with no problems (dino).

The important thing is to use the correct graded oil on the star label and as far as the weight it goes by region. If you live in hot climates you'll need thicker oil or colder climates thinner oil.

Frequent changes and quality filters are important with dino and you should have no problems.

It's not like a race car where you're taching it out all the time and need a specially formulated oil.

As to synthetics - - they are far superior to dino in all respects from what I've read and been told. (full synthetics - not blends)

I do my own oil changes because it is more convenient for me and I know exactly what is going in. I don't trust the quick-lube places. Went to the dealer for the first oil change as it was free and the filters are almost impossible to get off the first time. Also dino is better for break-in on a new engine so I've been told. Don't know if that's true I don't see where it would hurt it.

Last oil change I switched to Mobil 1 and used 5w30 weight @ 4.25 a qt x5 = $21.25 + tax and a Mopar filter (as I'm in warranty) for $6.25 (incl tax ?). That totals $27.50. When I get 3000 miles I'll check it and see what color it is. Then decide when to change. First time I've used synthetic so I'm in the experimental stage.

This is my opinion based on my experience and driving conditions. Yours could differ.

Post subject:  Gas mileage w/synthetic oil

Besides the obvious benefit of better engine protection and longer engine life, have any of you folks noticed any increase in gas mileage? I'm trying to justify the extra cost of synthetic oil over dino oil, ie. will there be enough MPG increase to offset today's higher gas prices?

Thanks in advance,

Jerry

Check this out...take you a bottle of that 90 cent stuff and set it outside for a year with the caps loose, in the sun, beside a good brand. Look at it this winter when its freezing outside. You'll believe

How about less money in the pockets of the "Sultan of Ragheadastan"

JJ...I change mine all by myself  $20 to about $35 max for my oil change. Mobile 1 syn or Castrol syntec semi, and Puralotor or NAPA filter. Depends on the combo I go with. My oil is ALWAYS cleaner without the K&N air filter too.

How much for the Amsoil filter???

I save my used oil and mix it with termite killer and pour it around structures for prevention...I'm a republican.

I don't think that you're going to see much mpg difference with synthetic over dino. If you got between 1-2 mpg more that really would be a lot. I noticed that the thing that affects my mpg the most by far is speed. You're driving a vehicle with the aerodynamics of a brick. When I drive my girl-friend's Cutlass (which is not often) I get 29mpg and it is the 3.5 liter v-6. When I drive my brick (KJ) the best I can get is 22.5 - - 23 tops once with a tail wind on the interstate. But I can tow 5,000 lbs and I don't think her Cutlass is made to tow anything. I've also been in some fairly nasty and fun places off road. I towed a 3000 lb boat on an 800 lb trailer + anchors chains and gear + passengers 100 miles and got 16.5 mpg per the EVIC with o/d locked out and in full-time. That's not bad. If you're just looking for better mpg you'll need to start looking at small- - mid size cars for a DD and use the KJ for week-end fun. I'd still rather drive my KJ over her Cutlass.
