Post subject:  Engine stalling at start up

I've had this happen on and off for the last year. It usually did it once in a while but then would be fine and wouldn't do it again for a few months. But went out to do errands with my girl and every stop we made, I would start my Jeep and the engine would start then immediately stall out. Try it a second time, it would stall or start. When it starts the engine runs fine. I do notice this happens on the change of seasons. Anyone else have this happen? Thoughts?

Also, not sure if its connected or not, but twice in the last week I would go to start the engine and it would just have a whir noise. I'd turn the key back and push it forward again to start and it would be fine. Not sure if its coincidence or not.

128k miles on a 3.7L

Thanks :)

Sounds like a vapor lock issue. Mine does similar in the right conditions, I don't worry about it. Restarts just fine. Not really sure about a solution for it.

The whirl noise points to a bad starter solenoid...the solenoid is energizing and supplying power to the starter motor causing it to spin but the pinion gear on the starter motor is not extending to engage the flywheel.

These starters do not use the old "Bendix" system whereby the pinion gear is flung outwards by rotational inertia but rather has a pivoting fork that pushes the pinion gear outwards. Sometimes a bit of lubrication on the pinion shaft will help...you need to pull out the solenoid/starter assembly and have a look at what happens if you apply voltage to it..the starter motor needs to be grounded to engine when doing this. :?

I don't know how drastic your season changes are but a couple things I can think of are: A dirty throttle body, faulty crank, cam, or throttle position sensors or a failing fuel pump. I've also seen where the battery in the key dies and causes this problem but its usually a done deal and wont restart with that key. I would start by giving the throttle body a good cleaning. Not sure if these jeeps require a throttle relearn procedure or not but I know my Nissan did after a throttle body cleaning. I don't think they do because they have throttle cables. Anyway, a good shop can test the output signals of your sensors with an oscilloscope and tell you if the signal has degraded. The fuel pump can be intermittently producing low pressure. This can be tested with fuel pressure gauge but you would have to hook it up every time you wanted to start your jeep and compare the results between start and no start. Either way, something is not working properly. The more I think about it I am leaning toward the fuel pump failing. Could even be junk in the fuel tank.

If there is a battery inside the key then it is purely to lock/unlock the door....early KJs have a seperate fob with the battery inside for this function.

If the KJ has the SKIS anti theft system installed then the key has a chip inside which is read by the SKIM module at the top of the steering column...this module effectively has a wire loop surrounding the key slot and reads the SKIS code off the chip.

Any problem with this system cause the SKIS light on the cluster to either flash or stay ON all the time....early KJs have a "Key" icon on the cluster while later KJs use a red LED.

So it is unlikely that this is the problem but the SKIS system does energize the ASD relay under the hood which can give problems.

Worth while swapping the ASD relay out with and identical one next to it!

Agree that the fuel filter or the fuel tank could be gunged up!

Hey. Thanks a lot guys. Learned a lot :) Since we're talking fuel pumps and gunk in the fuel tank and the likes, when I fill up, it does tend to leak fuel out when the pump clicks. Not sure if its related or not. It's also hard to track since I live in New Jersey and its illegal to pump your own gas. Though guess I have no excuse since I can always get my lazy butt out of my Jeep and watch lol.

In terms of the whir noise, haven't heard it in a couple weeks though just in case, I did look up starters and how to replace it and it doesn't seem so bad.

And mike, I live in New Jersey. Last week it was in the 30s and now I'm outside in shorts typing this. So I guess you can say the seasonal changes can be drastic :)

And just as an update, I went out to dinner with my girlfriend and I had a lot of trouble getting it started. Same as I posted a few days ago but I had a lot more trouble getting it going. Had to start it and tap the accelerator to get fuel in, then it was fine. I'm starting to think my girl is the problem. Doesn't seem to want to start when she's in the car with me ;)

Weird mine does the same thing...... only its a CRD. I find it usually only happens on short trips say <10mins or so.
