Hey guys! Just yesterday my 2006 3.7l KJ started making a howling noise from somewhere in the drivetrain. To me, in the cabin, it sounds like it's from somewhere in the front axle. I'm guessing either a wheel bearing or an issue with the front diff. At first, we thought it was the U-joint on my front driveshaft from my T-Case to my front diff. After pulling that, and finding out how worn my U-joint was (And in need of replacement) we figured we solved the problem. However, it's still howling away.

Problems:
-Loud Howl (Same pitch as my K02's, but way, way louder.)
-Sounds like it's from the front axle
-Dependent on wheel speed, not engine speed
-No clicking, grinding, or other metal on metal sounds
-Wheels don't have any play other than what's expected
-CV joints have a small grease leak, but it should be fine. Doesn't sound like it's the CV Boot (no clicking)
-Wheels are brand new and should have been aligned less than 1k miles ago
-Lug nuts are tight
-Rotors are fine
-Sound completely stops while turning right, but doesn't get louder when turning left

I have to drive 200 miles back to college tomorrow. Anyone know what this issue could be? Along with that, is it safe? Thanks for the help

It sounds like tire wear. A little feathet/cupping can make all kinds of noise

If it's louder while turning it's usually a wheel bearing. Just put it on stands and remove the tires, and spin the hub on both sides. One may be obvious, but if you feel both you will probably feel a less than smooth bearing. I learned my lesson recently that these bearings can be the opposite side than what you would expect, or they have an inner and outer bearing. The front right for instance can howl in a left or right turn depending on which part of it is toast...

If it's as loud as you are describing I wouldn't want to travel at highway speeds on it. Try to see if it's obvious, and pay someone to replace it if you can feel it, or roll the dice. :JEEPIN:

If you do Mountainman's test, but find the wheel bearings are ok, it's possibly the diff - don't ask how I know.

Yeah I was thinking diff. I would say to have the diff checked out. My buddies Grand Cherokee was howling and the ring and pinion were worn real bad. I hope its a bearing though, much easier and cheaper to fix. Anyway, I was able to get a free diagnosis from an axle rebuilder so you might want to check into that.
