Post subject:  Programming new FOBs

So I have been going crazy here, trying to program my two new fobs I got off of Ebay for my 06 Liberty CRD. Seems like it should have been a snap. I have one working FOB. I tried following the instructions in the owners manual, both ways. Neither worked.

I have searched online and there are a few different instruction sequences which are supposed to work for Liberties, but I have not had any luck with them either. Basically it seems that I cannot get the car into FOB program mode. On the EVIC, the menu option for programming remotes is just NOT there??? Even though my owners manual says it should be. Using the working remote, I have tried holding the unlock then the panic (as the owner manual says) but that does not seem to put the car into program mode. At least there is no chime, and the sequence for programming modules does nothing (new or old fobs).

Anyhow I am out of ideas. Almost seems like this car is locked, and won't go into fob programming mode. Is such a thing possible? Odd that the owners manual instructions don't work. I'd think that these new ebay FOBs are junk, but the car never seems to go into program mode, and I can't even reprogram the existing working FOB.

Does anyone know the right sequence for programming new FOBs to the car? Obviously there is some secret handshake that I don't know here.

Note: You must have two valid keys to add a new key to the system.

1. Insert the first valid key into the ignition switch. Turn the ignition switch to the
ON/RUN position for at least three seconds, but no longer than 15 seconds.
Then, Turn the ignition switch to the LOCK position and remove the first key.

2. Insert the second valid key into the ignition switch. Turn the ignition switch to
the ON/RUN position within 15 seconds. After 10 seconds, a chime will sound.
In addition, the Vehicle Security Light will begin to flash. Turn the ignition switch
to the LOCK position and remove the second key.

3. Insert the new key into the ignition switch. Turn the ignition switch to the
ON/RUN position.within 60 seconds. After 10 seconds, a single chime will
sound. In addition, the Vehicle Security Light will stop flashing. To indicate that
programming is complete, the Vehicle Security Light will turn on again for
seconds and then turn off.

The new key is now programmed. The Remote Keyless Entry transmitter will
also be programmed during this procedure.

Repeat this procedure to program up to eight keys.

Note: If you do not have 2 valid working keys you will have to call a
Locksmith to program or originate a key for you.

The instructions Flash posted work, I just did this to two new key FOB's I bought off eBay and it worked like a champ!
But as noted, you must have two working keys to program new keys.
In my case, the buttons on one of my FOB's quit and a new battery did not fix it, so I ordered two new key/FOBs off eBay.
I cut them and used the two old keys that still worked OK in the ignition switch to program the new ones per the instructions.
If you do not have two keys that still function OK in the ignition switch (buttons do not have to work), then a locksmith or a dealer with an ODBIII is your other choices.... :dizzy:

Thanks. Those are the instructions I've seen for programming Keys, not FOBs (remotes). Unfortunately I need a second programmed key before I can do this programming. Right now just want to be sure the remote parts of these new keys work.

I just wanted to get these new ebay keys/fobs remote part programmed. That's what I've been trying to do with no success. If you have any suggestions for that part of the programming I'd love to hear...

Let me say a bit more about what I've done.

I have looked at the EVIC display and run thru all the menu options. There is no remote programming option, unlike what my manual and several online sources say. I did find something online where someone else with an 05 also found no option on the EVIC to program remotes. So maybe this is a feature Jeep removed but didn't take out of the user manual?

Multiple places, including the owners manual, say to turn on the ignition (no start), press unlock for 4 sec, press panic for 1 sec then release both. That should put it into remote program mode. Then push lock & unlock together then unlock and you should hear a chime indicating that the remote is programmed. Repeat for all remotes you want to use.

Well I've tried that many times (5 or 6). Never chimes. The old remote does not reprogram and it continues to work afterwards, so it appears that the car never entered the remote programming mode.

Not quite sure what else to try. Is there some way the PO could have had the dealer lock the remote programming? The one remote that works works very well, opens closes panic all work. So I don't think it is a problem with it not sending the signal to get into program mode. Is there any alternative way to program these? Anything else to try before going to a dealer or locksmith?

The instructions in my on-line pdf manual is a little different than the ones you stated.
Try these and see if you are successful? Best of luck!

The following procedure can be used as long as one
functioning transmitter is available:
(1) Turn ignition to the RUN position (allow ignition
chimes to stop).
(2) Using any original (working) transmitter, press
the UNLOCK button for 4 to 10 seconds.
(3) Within the specified 4 to 10 seconds, continue
pressing
the UNLOCK button and press the PANIC
button for 1 second, and release both buttons (a
chime will sound to indicate that the transmitter programming
mode has been entered - allow 3 seconds
for chime to sound).
(4) Press LOCK and UNLOCK buttons simultaneously
for 1 second and release.
(5) Press and release any button on the same
transmitter and a chime will sound after successfully
programming the transmitter.
(6) Repeat steps 4 to 6 to program additional
transmitters.
(7) Turn ignition to the OFF position. Transmitter
programming mode will discontinue after 60 seconds.
All transmitter programming must be completed
within time specified.

Thanks WWDiesel.

That is the procedure I've been following (although I didn't go into all that detail in my post). In searching the net, it seems that sometimes the chime after releasing unlock and panic together does not happen and remotes can still be programmed that is you are in remote programming mode (there is a youtube where this is the case).

Anyhow, I have tried this sequence at least 6-10 times, probably more, with no luck. My working remote is fine to lock/unlock or start the panic alarm, but it never seems to put the car into remote program mode. No clue why. Believe me I have been very, very careful about the button presses and times, yet it never works. The working remote never reprograms itself (never hear that chime after I try, and even if I don't press any buttons on it, it continues working). Seems like I just never get into remote program mode.

Not sure what it could be. I actually ran the battery down trying, so put it on a charger and tried again at full charge. No difference. It has been very cold out (single digits F) but the remote works to lock, unlock and panic no problem, so I would think reprogramming would work too.

I was thinking that perhaps a dealer could lock out remote programming or something like that. Might explain my not being able to get into programming mode, and remote programming not being an option on the EVIC menu. But I may just be grasping at straws here.

Any other tricks to this???

No other tricks according to mechanic other than programming with a DRBIII tool.
he also stated that he can look at the self program mode on the EVAC and see why it does not work...
Most locksmiths can do this as well.
Where are you located? We charge $29 here to cut a new key and program a key/FOB.. .

Thanks again WWDiesel.

Unfortunately I am too far away to come by for this, out in Colorado. That is a great price for cutting and programming a new key. The dealers here are all >$100 for the same.

I plan to try again, maybe in warmer weather, and let someone else in the family try doing the buttons (just in case I am not pushing/releasing them in a way the computer likes).

If you find anything out about locking out remote programming mode, let me know...

Check with some locksmiths, they may be much cheaper?
Best of luck....

Depending on where you are in Colorado SirSam may have the tool. I'd suggest you add your location to your signature; helps in locating help near you.

I have a DRBIII and it can program keys and fobs, but I am told it will not work on 06KJs. Only 05 and older - though I have never tried to connect to an 06. I'm in Fort Collins.
