| Post subject: | Hey, need some advice! |
First a bit of background. My parents bought the KJ for me as a reliable college car; they didn't want me wasting money to keep taking a clunker to the shop, etc. I got bit by the wheeling bug shortly after. My grades at KSU have been pretty miserable (at least, not high enough for me to justify them paying for school) so I joined the Navy. I'm leaving sometime between Aug. 1 this year and Jan. 3 '07. What I'm wondering is this: should I keep the KJ anyway (my parents already told me they'd let me keep it after I'm through with training), or let them sell it, keep it, whatever, and buy a used Rubicon? If I keep the Libby I'll probably Frankenlift it this summer, if not I won't be adding anything new to it. I really want the Rubicon, but having the space in the KJ is nice too. It's not like this is an urgent decision, but I'm trying to think up some ideas I guess. |

Sounds like you should make a list of pro's and con's for both vehicles, and decide which suits your NEEDS best (read: not the one with the biggest 'cool' factor). |

Well I congrats on the decision on to join the Navy. What are you going to sign up to be? Depending on what you sign up to be(which Rate) will depend on where you go and how much time you have to spend with the KJ. Tell us what you have in mind and some of us can lend some advise, (Go HM), but really it depends on what your into. Next how bad do you want to keep the KJ or get into the Rubi? Keeping the KJ you know what you have already with payments and insurance. As an E-1 after the first 4 months you will be making like $1270. Hope this gets you started. |

Sorry, I don't think I could be a corpsman - that sort of stuff gives me the willies Oh and the college credits I've earned already mean I can go in as an E-2. |

I was a MS (cook for non-navy types) for 20 and if your going to be in the states for most of the time for training and homeport or whatever. i would stay with the Liberty. It will come in handy much more then what you use it for in school. I.E. hauling coolers, grills, people, coolers and your already part of a Nationwide club that would help you out no matter where you are. |

I can tell you this, If the KJ is paid for and you keep it for the whole 20 years in the Navy you will almost be a Millionaire when you retire and never have to worry about money. Its cheap to fix and there will always be parts, read the repair manual as often as Playboy and do most of the work yourself. |

i have both TJ and a KJ so i know what is good and bad about both if you plan to stay single or at least not have any kids for a while ,dont like to drive you friends around, dont mind being cold in the winter hot in the summer riding in a noisy windy cant hear the person sitting next to you because the top is a few years old and is not as tight as new but want to rule the trail off road then sure a TJ is for you oh yeah and dont even think about moving any thing biger than a 30" tv but if you dont need to rule the trail just make it up the hill then i would stick with the KJ besides its paid for and insted of paying a car note you could put that money into mods for the KJ that you will do to a TJ any way |

You should have looked at why you were getting bad grades. Not mature enough to study and learn? Some people need more time to go have fun in life before they settle down and get their degree. The Navy is a great experience (if you get to travel to other countries). If you want to stay land-based, you should have joined the Air Force. Good luck at Boot Camp. I am sure it has changed a lot since I went to Great Mistakes (Lakes). I had my "A" school there also. |

Congrats on your decision to join the Navy. It's been great for me these last 20. I will retire in August. Seabee's are a tight knit community and very "team" oriented. They tend to take care of each other. If you can accept everyone as a "shipmate" utill they prove otherwise, you will fit in. Be prepared, however, for a totally different lifestyle and attitude than what you are used to. Whatever vehicle you decide on, maintenance/repairs/upgrades can be done easily by yourself and/or friends at the "Auto Hobby shop" on the base you will be stationed at. The shop will have all the tools you need and personnel there who can assist/advise you when you need it. All for three bucks an hour. Good Luck!!! |

It's a tough decision. A tradeoff between cargo + people space and rugged offroadworthiness. Of course, you already know that the liberty is offroad worthy and wrangler-owners will tell you that they can fit stuff in there. I went with the liberty because I plan on having it for a long time. 5-10 years from now who knows where I'll be, and I like being able to fit furniture and lots of stuff in there. But also think about what will be available when you get back. The 4-door wrangler, for one. The KJ will sit around and depreciate, which is unfortunate but true. Depending on how long you'll be gone for, there may well be a few grand difference between the value now and the value when you get back. |

Jeepster said: "Got to love that goot TEXAS advice!" Actually, I'm from TurnerVille, Alabama (got to TEXAS as fast as I could), retired military, kept a 69 chev truck my whole 20 years, almost a Millionaire. When I haul in the rest of my "Just Cause" Booty from Panama, I should be over a bit. |
