To lock or not?

I think that 1 locking lug nut is a no brainer on the spare... What about the other 4 tires? Do you or don't you?

My wife is concerned that we will not have the key with us and if we get a flat well how the hell are we going to change it? :D
I am concerned that we live in Toronto and I don't need some kid thinking my Renegade rims would look nice on his mom's grocery getter KJ...

Ever have any issues with locking lug nuts?
I read in another thread that most dealerships have a kit to remove them anyway?

So tell me the good, the bad and the ugly...

Right now I have four, on the wheels on the ground. Need to get one for my spare.

Yes, I've had lock issues in the past. Vise grips, hammers/chisels, and finally an extractor to get the bugger off.

They do make a specail kit to remove the locking lugs(about $35) but when I worked at a dealership body shop we always used a 13/16 deepwell impact socket and hammered it on,worked like a champ. So it's not to hard to get them off.

I have used the deep well socket & hammer trick as well. I voted zero, but I do have a cable lock on the spare and some little "nut lock" gimmick dealy-bob on the studs out of the tailgate.

Maybe I'm paranoid, but I've got one on each wheel. I'm not too worried about the wheels themselves, just the tires - my AT's cost too much not to have 'em locked up, imo. I'm not too worried about losing the key, I keep it inside the Jeep with me. Actually I have 2 keys, because I could only find locking lug nuts in sets of 4

I just have one on the spare. Had em on all the wheels but took em off when I rotated the tires. Then got a flat so I had to use the spare but I did put that one back. I don't know why?

I've got those 17" crome wheels with the crummy Badyears. If any of you guys wants to steal them let me know and I'll take the lock off the spare. Then I can have an excuse to get 16" rims and decent tires..............................can't find a decent tires for the 17's

I only have the cheap steel sport wheels so I haven't bought a set of locks yet but when I get the new wheels I'll be putting on 1 lock/wheel including the spare.

GOOD: Are yall using the round factory type?? They come in a set of 5 from the dealer. Nobody can get them off in the parking lot without major trouble, thats why I have only 1 per wheel. Order an extra key.

BAD: The keyed attachment is not the same metal as the locking lug. Never use the key with an impact wrench. Use it only with the lug wrench or it can break. Did you order the extra key??

UGLY: I had to use an air hammer chisel in the grooves when the key broke. That deep well thing was impossible, The socket blew and still didn't leave a mark on the lug nut. On my new set (5) I ordered an extra key too.
The factory lock nuts are so hard, my air chisel did not even scratch them. Even Vice grips and a hammer did not leave a mark...not a scratch. I don't know what kinda metal that is.

I've used the harder sockets designed for impacts with success. Tactical nuclear device may be your last resort

Mopar set of five locking lug nuts, one on each wheel including the spare. Helping me make sure my moabs and MT/Rs stay mine. If you keep the key in your jeep, how could you lose it?

Thanks for all the responses guys...

I definitely want to pick a set up now...

For a while I thought it would be foolish to store the key in your glove box but then I realized that if they were going to break in to your KJ it would likely be to steal it... Not to find the key to the locking lug nuts! heh heh

Now the question is whether I can find the Mopar set of 5 for less than the $55 CDN that my dealer wants!
I would prefer to have a set of 5 instead of buying two sets of 4...

Have to check with UAP/NAPA or PartsSouce...

I have a set of gorilla locks on my wheels, they are really easy to use, I haven't had a problem. They only came in sets of 4 where I got them, so I actually just put all 8 on the jeep. Maybe just 7? I don't remember...

I keep the keys in the glove box (and stuck the stickers in there as well). I had to get a new 4-way because the stock one is a different size than the locks. I should get a foldable one, the 4-way doesn't fit anywhere in the jeep.

I figure if anybody is going to bust a window to get into the glove box to get the wheel key to steal my wheels, they may as well just steal the jeep.

Wanna hear something scary?

I bought a set for my KJ, no problems. A set of 5, in fact, from Mopar.

When I bought the RUbicon, used, there was one on the spare only, but the key was lost. Just for the hell of it, I tried the key from my KJ and it worked.

Then, when KJ-BOL and I were doing our lifts, I decided to try my key on his locks as well, and it also worked on those. SOmething tells me these things are all keyed the same or very similar. Not a foolproof design, at all.

Yeah man, I say lock'em up, especially that spare, ESPECIALLY when you get some tires put on there.

Both sets of gorillas I have are different. It's a bit of a pain when I am swapping tires around, I have to try both keys because I never remember which is which. Worth it in the end for that peace of mind to not come out of a store and find my jeep up on blocks!

You people are living in the wrong parts of the world... 0 lock nuts for me- I hate those things.. just about the time you have a flat and need to change it the locking lug nut tool spins inside the nut and destroys it beyond use, and you are stuck on the side of the road. More than likely the last moron that put your tires on over-tightened it with an air wrench (I hate that). Wait!! Does that ever happen? ummmm....

I have 2 sets of locks on all five wheels. Just the garage mechanic whines about changing the lock keys at different hex size... basically just to slow the thieves down.

In Canada, u can't pack heat, so property crime is high compared to other equivalent population cities in the US since the perps don't fear getting caught!!!

Get them from McGard Lock ...that is what Mopar uses... they sell sets of five in a pack.

U can get em for $40ish CAD...look around.

Today, stupid Auto Zone said they don't carry them for the Liberty. I said OK, how about Jeep Wrangler.... nope. So I put what I had back on the counter. As I walked out she said sorry..... I said well it just doesn't make sense that you don't carry them, both are very popular vehicle and that is just lame. So I go to Advanced Auto, sure we do, they said.

Hey, which set did you get? There are many different shapes/sizes so I'm unsure. :)

thx
