Post subject:  bugs!

I am normally not a fan of add-on doo-dads like bug deflectors, stickers, flags, etc. Great if you do like extras, but I'm kind of a clean-and-simple guy.

Anyway, the bugs coating my windshield are driving me nuts! Do the deflectors help? Do they attach to the underside of the hood, or how exactly? Do any look/work better than others?

Thanks.

What year and kind of KJ do you have? I know there are deflectors out there for the 02-04 and 05-06 "bug-eye" hoods, but have yet to see any deflectors for the 05-06 Flat-hood.

Its pretty cheap and the bug goo comes right off the windshield

I've got an '05 CRD and I have been using Rain-X, but part of my commute goes through an area full of honeybees and some other really fat juicy green bug. They goo up my windshield so bad that I can't even imagine how bad it would be without the Rain-X.

Is Rain-X a mod?? I love the stuff too, keep it fresh on all my cars and hardly need the wipers.

I think Mopar has a bug deflector for the KJ.

FWIW, I seem to recall a thread from a long time ago on the old board about bug deflectors. Some folks said that they seemed to notice more problems with rocks hitting the windshield after they installed the bug deflectors. Just a thought.

i have a o5 renny with the flat hood and had a mopor bug sheild and it worked fine, but i sold it to fisheye maybe he can chime in on his results but mopor does make them and they are pricey compared to aftermarket bug sheilds, heres a picture of fisheyes hood with the one i sold him

I have a bug deflector and it only protect the front of the hood. I washed, waxed my Renegade sunday and pulled out of my subdivision and Splattered a huge bug on my windshield.

Nothing will stop them from hitting the windshield, but a nice coat of rain-X will help you clean them off.

I had installed one on my 03 KJ sport and one on my wife's 04 KJ sport.
I like the bug shield. I think it helps a great deal from the mass death of bugs hitting my wind shield.
The mopar shield is pretty costly. I used an aftermarket and it looks just as good as the mopar shields.
It fits rite uner the hood rest and the hood fully closes and you can open it with out any force like other bug shields sometimes do.

That is just my thought on this posting.

Post subject:  Why bugs hit

I just read an article regarding research performed by a scientist from the University of Michigan who studies stuff like bugs. Most bugs fly 4 to 5 feet above the ground...so right about windsheild level. Also, butterflies are attracted to the reflective surfaces of highway markers and signs, so they will be fluttering around highways waiting to get splattered on your windshield.

I'm not sure if you guys have seen this stuff yet, but Rain-X has a premixed bottles of washer fluid with Bug-Remover. It's working great so far. It really helps get the goo off.

Just to give an option to rain-x there is some stuff out there called Aquapel Glass Treatment. It is THE BEST stuff out there for windows. This stuff lasts 8 to 12 months before it needs to be reapplyed. It makes everything come off your windshield easier. Muddy water just sheets off the window leaving little or no film, bugs come off easier. It's a little more expensive than rain-x but man I swear buy it. The dealer I worked for used to sell it and we sold the crap out of it. My last car had better aerodynamics than my KJ, but when you go down the highway at 70 in a rainstorm it looks like you are going warp speed. I'm telling you guys it is well worth the money. FYI Large planes(i.e. 747's, etc) that have thier windows treated with aquapel from the factory aren't required to have a back up window wiper system. The smaller Cessna's and such don't have to have windshield wipers if thier windows are treated with it. Hope this helps
