Ok, I have a brand new 2006 Renegade 4x4 (automatic 3.7L) with all of the off-road stuff...The manual mentions the trac-lok Limited Slip option, and since I did not get a window sticker with my new vehicle, I have no idea if mine is equiped. I am comming over from the ford world, where a little tag attached to a bolt on the differential housing would tell you everything you need to know about what differential you have. Can some please tell me how to find out if I have the Trac-Lok, and what my gear ration is? I have the tow package, so I would assume I have the 3.73's, but I would like to know for sure. Thanks, |

There should be a tag on the right side(standing from behind) of the axle that tells you everything. Another good way is to jack up the jeep and spin one of the back tires. If you cant move it(with the e-brake OFF and tranny in 1st) then you have trac-lok. If the other tire turns in the other direction, your open and it must suck for you!! |

I assumed there must be a tag, but for the life of me, I can't find one. I don't suppose anyone can take a pic of what the tag looks like, so I know what to look for? Unfortnately, my floor jack is packed away for the move, and I don't really think that little jeep jack is worth the effort. |

Ok, I found it. I have the 3.73's, but I could not find anything about the differential...It says 409 and then AB below it. Do those codes mean anything? |

Now I'm pissed. I ASSUMED that I had Trac-Loc on my new Renegade. Unfortunatly, the dealer didn't mention that one as we were going through the list of options to order. And I don't see the metal tag on the back of the diff. D^#%! OK Mr. Wizard, now what do I do? Can I get one from a junk yard and have it put on? I'd hate to see what the dealer would charge. Or is this a good time to just get some lockers? |

Dont be too mad at the dealer. Im pretty sure that 05 was the last year they offered the Trac-Loc. Sure you could find one somewhere but I would go for the locker. |

Are you sure there are no Trac-Lok's post 2005? That kind of sounds familiar. How bad is the Break Assist "limited slip" that Jeep is so fond of? Sand is about the only offroading I do, would the standard traction break assist stuff work well enough? |

Yes. In 2006 they added esp, traction control and all of that crap. Mine says "open diff" along with all of that other crap you said, but now it has a locker! |

I had the Auburn ECTED in my B4000, and found that I never need to go full lock. The LS functionality worked fine on sand. If the Traction control LS is even close to as good as a clutch based LS, then I will not even worry about it. A full locker for my driving style is overkill. It was nice to know I had it, but that is about all. |

But why would you sell a jeep like the kj renegade w/o LSD? I guess I'll just have to hit the trail with smeone who can tow my ^$$ if I can't make it. Maybe I'll look into lockers or true track. |

I wouldn't underestimate the traction system on your liberty. It seems to acomplish the same task as a traditional LS, without the need to get the clutches rebuilt. |

OK. Have you had yours out yet? Just curious. My only time off road was pulling a stuck minivan out of the mud. It only lost traction once in that goo, but a little wheel turn fixed that right up. |

If you dont even know if it's there, do you really need it? If you find yourself in a "situation" enough times with an open diff, then you'll know you need a locker. Err...at least that what happened to me! Get your build sheet from the dealer by your VIN. I thought you were able to get it from jeep.com but couldnt find it just know. |

I havent taken the libby anywhere yet, but I took my B4000 that I just got rid of all over the place before I finally put the ECTED in it. I used an open diff on some of the softest sand on the planet with no difficulties. |

I only got excited because that was a prerec that a friend of mine has on some of his expeditions to Moab (and my durango had it - h3ii, if a durango mall rat had it, a renegade must - so i thought). I guess that's why I have front tow hooks - for him to pull me out if need be. If I have to get pulled around too much, I'll go with the truetracs. Thanks all. |
