CV's will make a sharp clicking (fairly loud) sound when your turning and will be quiet as long as your going straight and not going over bumps. There aren't any ways of looking at the CV other than looking at the boots to make sure they are not torn. So your not being paranoid at all. Check it out as soon as possible because if you let it go on for too long things, and I mean expensive things, will be breaking!

I was always told that the easiest way to check your CVs was to get movin about 35-40 MPH and brake really hard, just under the threshold of losing traction or activating ABS.
All of the weight of the vehicle will be shifted right on top of the front axles and if they grind and click when that happens, than the clock is ticking until failure.

Also A great way to check is to see if they are still there...
Look between your front wheel and the differential, if there is no CV axle shaft there, than its a safe bet that its shot. :-)r
