| Post subject: | removing rear cargo |
hey does anyone know how to remove the rear cargo unit (if you have it) from the back of the kj? the manual says to remove 2 bolts but i don't have the special allen wrench/screwdriver it looks like it requires? the rear cargo is more of a pain in the stupid than anything. don't think i should have gotten it to begin with. thanks kjjames |

I assume you mean the rear cargo organizer:
What kind of bolt is it attached with? Is it torx (star) or just Allen? |

can i get them at the local hardware store? I should think so. If you have a screwdriver with removable bits, you should be able to find a set of bits for it that are torx star bits, like this: http://www.sears.com/sr/javasr/product.do?cat=Power+Tool+Accessories&pid=00925514000 Your best bet is to go into the store with an idea of what size you need rather than buying online or something, though. That way you can buy a whole handful of them and go outside to the jeep to see what size you need and return the rest of em. Something like that is a good option, too: http://www.sears.com/sr/javasr/product.do?cat=Hand+Tools%2C+General+Purpose&pid=00930527000 |

Sorry, but why is such a pain? Claudio i think i just thought it would be more useful to me...thought i would use it more than i do. and i just prefer to have the open space in the back for storage vs. basically a divided shelf behind your back seat. it's just a personal preference i guess. |

I took mine out with just a Phillips. Maybe DC changed the design? I have an '05 and in that version there are two screws to each side, closest to the gate. If you want to get rid of it I'm sure you can sell it. After all, it's great for getting groceries |

Sell it. Brand-new (as in, not ordered with Jeep) will cost about $175 or so (if you went to dealer, they'll want to charge you $600 + "installation"). It's not practical for use off-road, because it can't hold much weight or volume. Even if you could put a lot of stuff in it in the 'up, but all sides folded down' position, it doesn't leave enough room underneath for things like: cooler, toolbox, sleeping bags, tent. However, if you managed to stuff things underneath it, then you get a fantastic hold-down at no extra cost |
