Post subject:  Jeep to dirty to service at the dealer??

This morning I took our 05 renny to the dealer to get a recal taken care of and also have them check out a clicking noise we started hearing coming from the front end any time we go over any bumps etc. So I drop the jeep of this morning and then go about do some errands, dr. appointment etc. I come back about 1.5 hours later and i see the jeep going up on the hoist. I let the service manager know I was back and if he needed me i would be waiting. Well he says to me "I will do the saftey recall but I am not looking at the front end." I asked him why was that. He told me that it was too dirty. Now let me explain somthing , we live in western north carolina in yancey county and live on a dirt road that connects to another dirt road that goes to the paved road. It been raining so naturally the road is a bit muddy. Also at the bottom of our drive way from the weight of the jeep we have made some nice ruts that fill up with water when it rains. By no means was the jeep too dirty. Yes there was mud on the rims and underneith the jeep but its a jeep GD! Our jeep was no where near as dirty or covered in mud as I have seen posted here :) I tell him that once he is done with the recall that i will go get it power washed at the car wash down the road. He made some comment which i couldnt make out. So I go sit down and wait for another 45 minutes. During this time i got to thinking how much this was bullpoop! I have never heard of being denied service becuase the car was too dirty. The service manager brought the keys back to me and told me " you know we could have called chrystler and voided your warranty". I asked him how was that. He told me all the mud underneith and on the rims. I laughed to myself and took the jeep home and told him i would call another day to make an appointment. So on my way home i call my wife at work and tell her the whole story. She was in total awe as to the stupidness of the whole story. She called the owner and talked with him. He informed my wife that "the liberty was not meant to go off road". She responded to him with the fact that we bought the renegade and off road package and not to mention that even in the broucher for the liberty one of the colors is dirt. He told her "thats just a marketing gimmic". He continued to tell my wife that " when we see a jeep like yours it shows that you are not using the vehicle as intended and thus can void the warranty". With nothing else to do or say my wife finished the call with him and hung up. So now according to the jeep dealer ship here in yancey county which is a 5 star dealer ( as if that really means anything) the libby is not meant for off road and by taking it off road you risk voiding your warranty. I thought i would post this here to see what everyone thinks or if anyone else has come across this problem. I will post a picture of our renny tomorrow to show just how "dirty" it is.

I.M.O. you should contact chrystler asap about this as you said that is bullpoop
yes abuse is not covered and yes some mods can void other parts i have even heard a story of people loosing coverage do to "oversized off road tires"
but that was one case and the guy was a butt to the dealer
chrystlers 1-800 number folks told me that if you break somehing whle offroad as long as you were not trying to drive through a river or drive over something and the bottom got damaged then the rest is under warranty
heck we have folks here in LA that have rubions with 36" tires and 6" of lift and they still get warranty work done even leaky axle seals so call chrystler and ask them about the warranty voiding thing but in the mean time find a new dealer

dont take that crap from the dealer. I would march right on back up there, and present the following questions:
What are skid plates that come on it for?
What's the offroad package for?
Why does it come with off-road tires on some models?
What's the renegade model for?
Whats 4x4 for?
Why doesn't the brochure for the Liberty ever show it on the road?

BTW, there's some great things you can quote straight from the brochure where Jeep (last time I checked, manufacturer of the Liberty, owned by DC lol) boasts the off-road abilities of the Liberty. Then call the 1-800 number and report this dealership and your experience.

The dealer is violating the Magnusson-Moss act and is full of crap if they think They can void a warranty. You should find a copy of the KJ Brochure that features info on lost and this forum. Have him explain that one away and don;t forget to print him up a copy of the Magnusson-Moss act. You can find a link to it in the FAQ section.

OK so I went back and got some of these quotes off the website's PDF brochure.

"Rumor has it that some people out there forgot that 4x4 vehicles are meant for 4x4 roads, not just highway commutes. That's why we created the Jeep Trail Rated system. It's proof that every Jeep Liberty 4x4 can capably handle brutal
tests for Traction, Articulation, Ground Clearance, Maneuverability, and Water Fording."

"At curb weight, Liberty delivers an impressive 9.4 inches of ground clearance, 37° approach angle, a 31.5° departure angle and a breakover angle of 21.8°."

"Liberty Sport 4X4 comes standard with the Command-Trac © part-time 4WD system. Liberty gets great traction through mud, sand, loose gravel and medium-sized hills because of this legendary 4x4 system."

Ask the dealer for a DC survey form right when you walk in next time and see how they treat ya.

Oh and what about the lil badge on the drivers side "trail rated" does that mean something else per DC ????

You should have whipped out the "06 KJ brochure...page 34" and said...hmmm looks like Jeep is "all about" the KJ being offroad....It's all but endorsed Lost KJ in it's factory literature...Picture of CA. Wally in Moab big as life right there on the WHOLE page

You should take in a copy of that Jeep Commercial I've seen floating around here where it shows the guy racing through the desert and over rocks and then carefully traversing the asphalt "path" he comes across...

JJsKJ has got it right bro....tell that guy to stuff it and force feed him the M-M Act.

Originally my dealership was a little taken back by my Renny, but over a couple of services and some "re-education" of the DC warranty package, the dealership has backed down and is more than happy to perform warrenty work on our suspension....even though its lifted....(we had to replace a front shock...squeeky)..no charge.

Now when I go in...the guy says "Where have been in that thing lately?" while smiling...and watching other customers eyes go  as I tell him my latest story....its actually developed into a good relationship....started out bad, but you can teach an old dog new tricks.

Let us know what happened....and don't wimp out in front of him....they're not the paying customer....you can take your money elsewhere.....they just work there, push paper, and count beans.

Also don't forget about the DC supported functions such as Camp Jeep and Jeep Jamboree.....They have offroad trails set up and run by them....what a jerk of a dealer you got.

I drove mine in covered with mud and they didn't say a dang thing about it.

Take it to another dealership. I had one tell me no dice and I went to another and they didn't even blink an eye...

Replaced the upper ball joints and the Rack n Pinion without a peep. ( my description of the problem to them was "I hear a noise when I go over bumps" ....(and thats with the Frankenlift and many a trail scar).

I bet they would have been more than happy to fix it had you been paying cash and not getting DCX's money!

Wow. Whats a stupid dealer. Whats cool about these kinds of dealers, you know more about your jeep than they do. Warranty of way over rated anyway, they hardly ever do anything that would be covered under it. I wouldnt worry about it, be sure to drive the extra mile to go to a different dealer though.

I'll bet DaimlerChrysler will get involved real quick if you call and tell them about the claims of the KJ not being capable offroad. That is contradicting the image of the brand. Which, if you mention that the company is wasting marketing money by dealers arguing with it, I would hope things would change. Sounds like laziness on the dealer's part to me. Worse comes to worse, try to find a lift friendly dealer near you, as they wouldn't have an issue with a little dirt.

I agree with desertkj. Nothing is worse for DCX than a dealer thats badmouting their own product. I read through my manual it mentions being able to ford 30 inches of still water and 11 inches of running. Last time I checked, that wasn't the road.
