I had a transmission service done when I had my '03 and afterward I had a hard downshift into 1st gear coming to a stop. I took it back to the servicing dealer and they ended up reprogramming something in the transmission and it worked perfectly afterward.

Make sure the proper fluid was put back in to the tranny as well..I believe it is ATF-4 or something like that. I hear that a lot of shops around the country don't carry it since it was once a DC only fluid...I've heard of a lower fluid being used in its place and causing hard shifts to occur...

Same here. They drove around the block with me to verify it, then did the reprogram. Didn't take long at all.

Sounds like a reprogram is in order, except that the dealer didn't do the service...therefore I'm sure it would cost me more $$$$$$. :(

JP

EDIT: Yes, they used the proper fluid...at least on the invoice.

I don't know about the reprogramming, I had transmission problems with My 03 liberty and they reprogrammed, rebuilt, rebuilt, it left me in the middle of the road with engine turning and transmission not catching. It took the transmission failing before jeep/dealer replaced the transmission. Have had no more problems since with it since. It would hard down shift when slowing down when it hit 30mph and also made lots of noise and just ran rough. Caused me to almost trade in the liberty a few times.

I have had no problems with transmission since. It was clearly a bad transmission.

UPDATE: Just thought I'd update for any who cared or for future reference...it took 10 days of daily driving and the shifts have smoothed back out on their own. Thanks for the input guys.

I was told by my dealership that the garage who flush and filled my transmission used the wrong fluid, which was the cause of my heavy 3-2 downshift. Not heavy enough fluid. I'm not messing with anyone but the dealership now when it comes to transmission work. The other garage could have cost me the whole transmission! I was their first Liberty. I won't be anyone's guinea pig again.

Video... just remember you might have only had the same problem as I did...I wouldn't believe anything a dealer said unless I really knew them. I talked with my guys though beforehand about the fluid. Hope it all worked out!
