Post subject:  Weird rear end noise???

I have been noticing a weird griding noise comming from my rear end diff......it makes the noise when I stop completely. When the wheels come to a halt I hear the diff grind down for about 1.5 seconds. I really notice it when I am in line at Chick-Fil-A...or McDonalds etc. The constant move forward and then stop, move forward and then stop....when the wheels stop (as well as the drive train obviously) then it grinds and stops after a little more than a second. And the grind starts loud then gradually gets softer until it stops after the short amount of time. ANY IDEA WHAT THE HECK IS GOING ON?!?! I have had rear diff oil changed 3 times. Once at 20K, then again at 40K, and changed the rear diff as well as the tranny fluid at 46K and I just hit 50K today.....any help is appreciated.

Sounds like either wheel bearings, axle bearings of carrier bearing if is happening regardless of braking or not. If it happens only under braking then it could be brake related. Under both scenarios you would have to be moving to hear any grinding.

Do you have an auto or manual tranny? If it is manual, then it could be the pilot bearing or throw out bearing...makes more sense because you are not moving when you here the noise. The pilot bearing comes into play when the clutch is depressed and the flywheel is still moving. It would make a gravely sound that you would be able to hear in that situation.

Have been trying to find a weird noise in mine for two days, found it tonight ...bad u joint. No play in it what so ever, seemed good but when you start moving a bad sound. Had it up on jack stands and in gear running and could hear it but not sure from where, when I shut it off and crawled underneath and happened to grab the u joint again, one of the caps was red hot and the others all cool feeling, knew right then that I found the problem. Now biggest problem all the parts stores are closed.
