Hey guys question for y'all. I see a lot of old Jeeps and some new ones that sound like freakin Harleys riding down the road. Very rattly and beater soundin, I think you guys know the sound. My pop used to say that his old '76 CJ sounded like this and he said he took something out, cant remember what it was, to make it sound that way. Do you guys know anything about this or anywhere I can find out more info on this. I have a Flowmaster 40 but I want more noise, not enough for me. Thanks guys. :D

Did he take out the muffler? :)

Im sure most of what you could do to make it louder would be illegal-- Those older jeeps probably had no cat no muffler and may not have had any exhaust pipe either Open headers are loud for sure. Try a straight through glass pack muffler. AKA the Cherry Bomb. Flowmaster has an outlaw series race muffler but I dont know if it is street legal. The glasspack will get louder with age but you can speed that up by getting it good and hot and spraying some cool water in it. Causes the packing to break down faster and then you basically have a straight pipe

Thanks for the reply, but I thought Cherry Bombs sounded more like Rice Burners, those nasty asian things. I do not want my rig to sound like a rice rocket in a Jeep body. Thanks for the info though, much appreciated, anything else guys...?

I have a glasspack and it will not sound remotely like a rice rocket, it is a low deep rumble. Not very loud but very deep.

No offense, but is this just to piss off everyone anywhere near you or for another reason?

I love when the shytebags near my house come flying up the road at 11pm with ATVs, dirt bikes, crotch rockets and butsted booty cars with no mufflers. This is the middle of a city btw. Not like I like on some country road.

Just remember that any time you pass someones house, you might not care, but they will, and they will be pissed.

Im not tryin to piss off others, i just want my Jeep to sound louder and older than it sounds. The Flowmaster 40 is deep and throaty, but not the type of sound Im lookin for. I already have gotten complaints about my muffler when I visit my friends house from neighbors, its fun :D If its too loud, you're too old

Or Maybe I'm just about the right age to know that what I do affects other people. I love when I'm trying to watch a movie with the wife and a harley drives by so freeking loud that it drowns out all sound from the surround speaker 1 foot from my head when the Harley is 100 feet away.

I shudder every time some idiot rides by on a dirt bike with no muffler and hope if I sell my house it's the dead of winter so they aren't on the street scaring away potential buyers.

I think I'm gonna string a chain across the road and just clothesline the idiots when they go by.

Or you could just back out in front of one of them....my dad was backing out of the driveway and one came flying around the corner doing about 40 and had to make agressive counter measures and somehow survived driving up the curb and through my neighbors yard...needless to say we haven't seen him around in a while

I dont mind a good sounding vehicle or even a harley that isnt just open pipes. However that does not mean I want to hear someone blip the throttle just to make it crack right in front of my house. If everyone would show just a little respect it would be great. Of course some should also try a little harder to earn it.

Here here...so back to my post. I called the local muffler shop today, Good Ol Boys mufflers (gotta love that name) and they said glass packs will wear out very fast and make it a straight pipe, therefore increasing noise and less backpressure. I am wondering if anyone on here uses glasspacks of any kind and whether they like the performance. I know that some of you sent me replies earlier in the post sayin you had em and liked em, but can anyone who does have one maybe send me a sound clip or be more descriptive as to the noise level and sound. Is it more like a Harley and clacky rattly beater Jeep soundin noise or is it a somewhat different noise? Like I said I already have a Flowmaster 40 and it is deep throaty, but not as rattly and open header or old school Jeep soundin. The guy at the muffler shop said they have no idea and rarely work on KJs so he does not know. Any help is great guys. Thanks so much! :D

Now it wasn't a jeep, but on my 69 Mustang I had headers with glasspacks and NO tailpipes for the first 5 years I owned it. It's a great sound, but yes the neighbors will hate you. I never got pulled over for it, but I see you're in CA and I'm talking about central IL. If you want it to sound good yes it'll do it, and yes the flow is nice too. I later put a full dual exhaust on it and there was a different feel. I have no idea how it would sound on the jeep, but it would be deep and raw as my best guess. :D

If you want your Jeep to sound old and ragged then just beat the hell out of the exaust. Wack the cat with a hammer a few times and drill a couple holes in random places. Your Liberty will sound like a piece of sh*t in no time.

Ok thanks guys, but to those who said they put glasspacks on their Jeeps, what brand was it? What are the dimensions? Overall lenght? 12" or 18" or more? What was the width? 2.25" 2.5" 3"? Much help is needed guys so I can make a good decision. I went to the muffler shop today and they said I could also sawzall the tailpipe after the muffler and do a turndown, but when you get under the KJ you realize there are only three hooks to suport the muffler. Anyone done a turndown on a Jeep or a KJ for that matter? It would be nice to keep the Flowmaster on and see how much louder it gets with a turndown. We would have to fab up some hooks to hold up the pipe and still let it give a little without fallin down while offroadin. Help guys please and thanks!!! :D :D :D
