My KJ failed inspection today for:

- worn tie rod ends
- worn rear brakes
- worn rear parking brake pads and broken parking brake cam adjuster (stupid parking brake design that never worked right!).

Anyone else have tie rod ends go? I've got 52k on the clock. Lifted for the last 22k. 31" BFG's. Off road about 6-10 times per year.

Feedback welcome as I sit here in my office on friday at 5:30p waiting for the trusty (and trusted, BTW) mechanic to call with the damages!

With that much offroad, it isn't a surprise. Get some that you can grease and do it after each trip out, especially when going through water like I see in your avatar.

As far as the p.brake wearing and star adjuster failing(this goes for all of us KJ'ers with rear drums to) when you wheel often or go thru alot of water the water removes all of the grease out of the pivot points and the star adjuster causing earlier failure. It is a good idea after you wheel through alot of water(I know this ia a pain in the butt, but it will help)to remove the rear wheels and take apart the p.assembly or drum brakes(since the p.brake assembly is a smaller version of our drum brakes)and clean everything and apply a small amount of marine grease to the pivot points, star adjuster, and where the shoes contact the backing plate.Don't really need alot,a little bit will go a long ways and will make your p.brake and/drum brakes last longer and work better. Also it is a good idea to spray some WD-40 in the p.brake cables(try to get it inbetween the cable and sheath)to displace any water in there to prevent it from seizing up on you.I've done this on my KJ a few times and my rear shoes show decent wear for the miles and my braking improves after time I've done this, trust me it sucks to do and is time comsuming.

Thanks.

That sounds exactly right. my star adjuster failed.

But now my brand new brakes in the left rear is seized. Please see my new thread on this.

I had a tie rod replaced last August at approximately 10K miles. It was still under warranty.
