Here are pics - cuz it DID happen :SOMBRERO:

Here's the hole where the original 3.73 axle used to live:
Image

Tom prepping the "new" axle for installation. We put my rotors on the axle (the rusty ones you see here are from the donor) and generally cleaned everything up. The gears looked great, and they should - they only have 43,000 miles on them:
Image

The old front diff is in the foreground, and Tom is putting a bracket on the new one that I bought 18 months ago from the main depot of LKQ:
Image

The front of the Libby looks nekked without the front suspension and diff:
Image

Essentially I have factory differentials with 4.10's in them for about the same cost as the labor to install new gears in one axle. A lot of work (yea, I'm tired today  ) but I really enjoy doing this kind of work on the Jeep rather than farming it out plus the satisfaction of having done the work with a fellow Jeeper.

I love the improved drivability; it's not dramatic like if I'd swapped in a V8 but there is just more torque, smoother shifts, and the Libby holds the speed set with the cruise control even when going up long grades. With the 3.73's I'd frequently push the OD button to force the tranny to downshift just to keep the speed where I wanted it.

Now I'm gonna research taller tires 8)

Thanks again, Tom!

Bob

I can just hear folks now..............
"Whats Tom doing in the second photo with that bar with all the holes in it, whats that do"
"What did you have to cut off in the 3rd photo?"

To answer those questions, we do things a bit different here
when you don't have the right tool, you make one and get it done one way or the other :-)r
On the rear pinion it was set up for a u-joint style and we had to switch it to the CV style that later models have, so that took some additional time. Thankfully Daryl helped out on that in a round about way

Tired today but fun day yesterday none the less
We could of gotten done sooner if we hadn't taken a lunch break, would of worked faster but why? Its work if you have to hurry through it and we had to get creative on a couple of things .
Bob still is using his original calipers/ brake lines etc we disconnected all of that and them hang, slid the new rear diff in and bolted it all back up , so no need to bleed the brakes etc. that way, worked well.

I'm surprised nobody caught what I just said...

The game is NEXT Saturday.

Bob, all you need is a new transmission now. Dang. Might as well grab one. You'll have a near brand new Jeep!

More than likely he's got a shower system you'll have to go through, then a white full body uniform, all body parts fully covered
Then just maybe he may let you in :ROTFL:

My wife wondered what I did all day Thursday. "Why were you gone so long - you just replaced some things, right...?"

"Uh, yeah honey, we just 'replaced' a couple of little things..." :ROTFL:

Did you show her the pictures of the " couple of little things? "
Tell her I thought they were pretty big, especially when I was unloading the rear diff off of the trailer

I thought sure when we went for a test ride he'd at least stop and do a decent burnout, but no he drove very conservatively. Heck I did one for him in mine !:ROTFL:
But I think he was smiling all the way home with it not shifting on every little hill/grade he came to.
Of course always will be some that will say it won't help any :banghead:

The difference mine had was HUGE. That may change when I put 31" tires on but it won't be much. 32"? That may make a difference but that doesn't fit the long term plan. I don't think an 11" wide tire will stuff properly when the front springs are upgraded.

Nice upgrade there Bob! Also nice to go lower, what a difference they made when I did it on my old Astro.

Spent some of day outside in the frigid weather, BBBRRRR , but got my walkway/ramp done for my mom/sister/ older relatives.
