I picked up a user eMac at our church yard sale for $300. Installed the free OpenOffice Suite and a handfull of other Mac freeware. Although its a tad slow (its five years old), it has been upgraded to the latest OS, and more memory. Does everything I used to do on my PC without the worry of viruses, trojans or spyware. Turned my old PC into a Linux file server to store all my songs and photos. My next computer will be a new Mac.

Be sure to install the free Photoshop software available on the Internet... it comes complete with a seriously bad virus infection. I'm not sure who told you that there was no reason to "worry of viruses, trojans or spyware", but you were misinformed. Just because the marketers want you to believe something is no reason to bite the bait.

I guess the term "freeware" was misleading. I would never install cracked versions of anything. I was referring to legitimate open-source applications, which are available at little-to-no cost. And as far as I know, there are no known viruses that affect Macs. There are a few anti-virus programs for the Mac, but they cause more trouble than good. They mainly keep Mac users from passing infected files onto less fortunate PC users. I use a Mac at home and a PC at work. I'm on the internet a lot more at home, go to a lot more different sites at home than at work, and never have problems with viruses. And, the Mac is on constantly (in sleep mode when not in use). My PC at work, however, gets infections constantly, and we run both anti-virus and anti-spyware apps. Just my observations.

You could get a pc with a solid state HD. You can get these totally badass boys now starting $150. You could fit it with a solid state drive. Also, if you're feeling froggy, you can probably boot off a USB memory stick.

I'm looking to make one of these my in-Jeep computer.

Then you need to fire your network admin. If you're getting any infections on your network or computers, someone's not doing their job properly.

I am a recent new owner of a Mac, and am glad I made the switch. I haven't run into any compatibility issues, and using the iWorks suite I bought with it I can save all my files with Office extensions to use by PC owners. I am very glad I made the switch.

However, I bought mine open-box from the Apple store at my local Best Buy. Knowing what I know now, it still would have been worth it to buy one new, but I got the open-box one for $999 - same price I would have paid for a decent PC laptop (my other consideration). I provbably wouldn't have bought one if they had not had this deal available.

Since I have a PC laptop through my work, I was OK with buying the desktop Mac rather than the MacBook - which was out of my budget. Also to boot, the model I bought was the last iteration of the previous gen. The only major difference between it and current models is that the current base has 4 GB of RAM, mine came with 2 GB. So I had Geeksquad go ahead and upgrade it to 4 GB of RAM, so I got basically a new Mac for $1079. Also still has the 10-key on the keyboard, the newer ones do not. Very happy.

I wish I could, but they don't work for me. They just recently decided it might be a good idea to install a web filter. Even with that the office staff can sit around and watch TV all day. (And I can waste time on Jeep forums  ). I've even told them I'm having issues, still no solutions. I run a deep scan weekly on my own.

Those are pretty slick. What would you use for a monitor while it was in the Jeep?

If you wanna run the Mac OS on your PC or vica versa, try this

http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads

I use it to run windoze in a virtual machine under linux as the host.

I run a PC and I'll continue to run a PC for at least another 5 years but I'm not against a Mac ... During past deployments, my unit has shared software and has had people who were very PC knowledgeable to help troubleshoot any problems (ie: network connections, etc ..). The one guy running a Mac constantly was having compatibility issues and no one knew enough about Macs to help him out. My wife's next computer though is going to be a Mac.

You have to wonder why there truly might be less need for anti-virus in Macs. The world has been dominated by PC. Mac was a dead horse in the late 80's and 90's. SO many hackers and haters have focused on hacking PC's. As Mac grows, more people will focus on hacking Macs and creating viruses. Just not a big deal to attack a Mac and try to spread a bug to the world.

Haven't decided. Possibly a smaller TFT screen like Teckman showed above. Here's one. A bit pricey, but a very popular model:

http://store.mp3car.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=MON-005

The other option is to just buy a small Netbook, get a solid state drive as a standard HD will never survive the rough-and-tumble world of offroading, and call it done.

When I used OS2 that problem was non existent as well, that was a niche OS, most hackers use Linux, at least that is what all the geeks tell me. In Linux, you have to give permission for installation of any thing, such as software, spy ware, trojans, and viruses. Almost all Linux software is free, yet it is all safe?

PC. Macs are too expensive, kinda childish, and PC's have more software and more tech service available.

I made the switch about 3 years ago so glad I did. Got so tired of crashing, freeze ups, brown screens, blue screens, malware, spyware, and talking to Pakistan anytime there was an issue...

My first mac was (is) a 13" white (up model) MacBook which with my military discount cost $899. For poops and grins, I built the same laptop (bus speed, processor, memory, bluetooth, wifi, camera, etc...) on dell, HP, and sony's site. Dell was the cheapest at $1900. So more than half the price for the same hardware, and my OS is so much better. For three years I haven't been able to find any software besides games (virtual PC is great) that I couldn't get a cheaper or better alternative on Mac.

I love my mac's so much I have 8 in the house now (though one is for sale :D )...

24" iMac for the family computer
17" MacBook Pro (wife's laptop)
2nd gen MacBook Air with 128 SSD (my laptop)
15" MacBook Pro (my old laptop, for sale)
13" White MacBook (my old-old, wife's old, oldest son's current laptop)
12" iBook (oldest son's old laptop, middle son's current laptop)
MacMini hooked up the 52" Plasma HDTV downstairs as HTPC/home media server (all movies and music)
MacMini hooked up to the 30" LCD HDTV in the bedroom to watch movies/listen to music upstairs

That's been said for years now. We (Mac user's aren't worried about it and laugh every time we hear that).

OS X also requires Admin passwords to install anything just as Linux does. Which is why Mac user's do not, and I repeat do not need anti-virus software. Speaking of software, everything Microsoft makes for Windows, they MAKE for OS X. And what they don't make, Mac user's don't need it. That's been proven.

For the record, there has never been a virus in the wild that affected a Mac. Period. There was however a time not too long ago when a virus was sent thru emails where the recipient had to click on a link > which took them to a site that required them to submit their Mac's Administration password. -- Of course once we all learned of this, most of us felt that if you're stupid enough to fall for that, you deserve a virus. So end of story really is that scumbag's who create viruses and other issue's for computer user's will most likely not affect Mac's because 1., the masses aren't there to make a impact they can with Windows user's, and 2., between the built-in firewall in OS X, and the admin password requirement to acess any Mac (unless the user's turns of that requiremnt - which is stupid), it's too difficult to crack a Mac.

My Mac is a 17" MacBook Pro. 2.93GHz. 4GB RAM. 256GB SSD.

Oh yeah, MAC's are hand tools. Mac's are computers.
