So I got home this evening after being gone for a week to find an empty coop, no food, no water, and my chickens huddled down in my basement window well.

So I got em up and out and back into the coop, refill food and water(stupid roomates - its not like there is any effort in refilling their food and water a couple of times while I am gone), and then to my surprise down in my window well are three eggs:

Dunno who laid em, the two chickens I thought would lay first lay white eggs, not brown, so I dunno who did this:

So I got another one this morning, I let them out of the coop and the black one ran right over to the window well and hopped in. She turned around a couple of times before nesting down in. Short while later I hear a little bit of noise and see her out walking around, sure enough, there is a nice brown egg down in the window well.

So I cooked up the 4 eggs I have from her for breakfast, nice hard shells, nothing like the skimpy store bought egg shells. Nice rich yolks, and they tasted absolutely delicious!

Nonsense. Chicken threads are good for the soul. The duck references, however, are a bit close to the edge....

but really, i had chickens too, and i used to love it when i went to the coop and get the eggs. alot of them used double yokes, which was always nice.

My parents had green egg laying chickens. I'm not sure if they still have them anymore.

One of my sister's moved back in with my parents recently and decided that eating the chicken eggs would cut into profits, so they only eat certain eggs now. But, I think they should up the price. Right now they are at $1.75 for a dozen. But, these are free range organic chicken eggs. They probably should sell them for $2 a dozen to local people and $2.25 for the people who drive down from Grand Rapids. Then again, they sold that lady 12 dozen or something like that.

They have a mixture of chickens now, so they get large, medium, and small. The turkey eggs are being incubated in hopes that they hatch. Organic free range turkey goes for about $100 for a 20 lb turkey. We had a 35 lb turkey for Thanksgiving and left the 45 lb one for later. That weight is the dressed weight (gutted and plucked).

$1.75 a dz, dang that is cheap. I know they are nearly double that here in Vegas...at least the last time I checked they were. The wife and I have talked about getting a few chickens to eat the crickets and for the eggs. We are in a no livestock area but...the neighbor has kids and his are far worse than any animal I have owned.

My question for you is, how big or an area do you need for them and how noisey are they?

Mature birds need 2sq feet per bird in the coop, then just a reasonible amount of room to run and play in, mine get a penned area about 10'x15'

hens are quiet, roosters are noisy. you dont want roosters.

I would like to get a few and put at my parents, get some eggs and help keep away flies from the horse manure. Problem is I want to let them run and with the dog and all the wild cats around, doubt they would live long. Kids want ducks for 4H so might have to make a pen anyway somewhere for those, might as well get a few chicks too.
Can't beat the taste of good fresh eggs.

Well, my brown leghorns have started laying, they are laying small white eggs right now.
(leghorns are the prodigious layers that commercial farms use)

So that makes 4 out of 5 chickens confirmed laying. Well yesterday I found another egg in the nest, a soft sheller, well all the chickens have laid very nice hard shelled well formed eggs, so I think this one is from my last chicken who wasn't laying. She didn't lay today, so tomorrow I'm hoping to get a nicely formed hard shell egg from her.

Excluding the soft shell these are the eggs I got today and yesterday:

Is it bad to eat the soft shelled ones?

I wouldn't.
BTW, anyone who's ever raised chickens and eaten eggs will most likely like to have their eggs hard fried. Cracking open one egg and having a half formed chick drop into the pan is enough to make sure that the rest are completely dead before you eat them.

LOL, one of my college roommates had that issue. He had a...farmette I think it was called...or something like that. Roughly 20 chickens, 1 rooster, 8 sheep and 1 cow. He said he had a few occasions where when he cracked open an egg there was a partial chick in it. He said while it was...gross the worst part was the smell of it, lol. It always made me think twice before I ate one of his eggs.

I saw a tip on a cooking show once. Instead of putting milk in your scrambled eggs, just use a bit of water. Pop a lid on, and the steam makes them fluffy and light. Great for an omelet.

I love to cook but have never had any formal education in it. When I make my eggs, I scramble about 2-3 add cheese and pour into a pan with slopped sides. I put a curved lid on and have the heat at about simmer. After about 4 min I tap the lid, remove the lid and shake the pan front to back and the egg just pops off. Usually it is up to the lid and tastes great! The curved lid traps any evaporated moisture from the cooking which then falls back into the eggs and 99% of the time helps them separate from the non stick pan. I am sure there is a name for this method of cooking...but I just call it good :)
