So a week ago friday I was on my way home (luckily it was 2am) and at about 45mph the rear end in my F250 LOCKED up. I skidded it into the turn lane and tried to regain my composure.
So it would move about 3/4 of a tire rotation in each direct. Only thing I could think of was the cross-shaft coming out of the dif. Only 3 blocks from home and I had to call a tow truck

Got the cover off and sure enough the pin holding the cross shaft in had broken than the cross shaft was hitting the pinion. Put a pretty good grove in the housing and knocked a couple teeth off the pinion. Luckily a guy on a local board had a complete rear for $75. So I grabbed it, went through it, and swapped the whole axle.

wow! thats gotta be a scare when not expecting your rear to lock up like that! glad nothing terrible happened, like a crash! thats crazy

I really have no idea what could cause the pin to break. It has practically no force against it.

Tires have a little flat spot, not too bad, they are due for replacement anyway.
Had this happened less than 2 miles earlier, could have been BAD. I had just got off the freeway. A section that is under construction with 2 NARROW lanes between concrete barriers. I would have been a pinball!
