http://www.denverpost.com/breakingnews/ci_11537740 Sixteen elk were killed early this morning in a traffic accident in the foothills west of Denver. A large number of elk were crossing I-70 in Jefferson County near the Beaver Brook exit at about 1 a.m. when the accident happened in the eastbound lanes, said Stacey Stegman, a spokeswoman with the Colorado Department of Transportation. "This is definitely unusual," said Stegman. "We usually don't see this large a number of animals involved." Elk have been known to migrate through the area and animal crossing signs are posted along the highway, Stegman said. A semi truck and two cars were involved in the accident. No humans were injured, Stegman said. *(apperantly the Semi Jack-knifed and took out the herd) Highway department officials used snow plows and dump trucks to removed the carcases from the highway. |
