Post subject:  moving advice?
Hey ladies and gents...I need some advice about moving. For those of you who dont know me(which is most of you..out there in cyberspace) My name is Adam,I'm 25, married and a proud daddy.(i know this isnt the intro section...just bare with me please..) Well my family and I are looking to move out of Massachusetts and into Maine, or any state other than MA of FL.
The advice I need is about the actual move. Things like how do i get a job in one state without actually living there yet?I'm a B level auto tech. with some certifications. How do we find housing?(We'd like to rent until we are confident that it'll work out)How do I get plugged in the local community, and find out what the scoop is?Has anyone done this? I know I just kind of came out of nowhere with this post but we are growing really REALLY tired of this state and want to move before the summer. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks :D

Start with what you are using now, the internet. You need to find either a job somewhere or a location, first. After that, then you can go to step two which is the other option given in step 1.

Once you have establsihed said job and said location, now you can look for a place to live. Perhaps just a temporary place like an apartment for a year just to make sure you have a safe job that won't be laying you off before the first 90 days or so. That will give you time ot explore the area and see where the nice areas you'd like to live and where the housing market is during that time.

If you were single w/o a kid, you could just pack up and move with little worry of where and when. Just go with the flow. With family, you have responsibilities to care for them so you have to be a little more cautious.

Something to think about is cost of living. I live in Ks right next to MO. Our cost of living is realitily cheap. What my wife makes here wouldn't let us have a box on either cost. I've worked in houses here in KS that were 15 million dollar homes, now take that same house to either cost and that house would cost you 30 mill. We have some of the best schools in the country. Kansas City is a pretty good place to live. We are finally trying to catch up with the rest of the country. And to top it all off there are about 6 to 10 places to wheel within 5 hours or so. Me personally I would have to at least look at NM or AZ.

Also think about weather. Midwest weather in the winters can be below zero one day and 65 or 70 the next day. Summers can go from 60 to 100+ in a heartbeat.

thanks for the heads up parakeet... i honestly didnt even consider the landlocked states....(born and raised a coast kid)
i'll have to run that by the mrs. youve got a very valid point about the cost of living, tho. what is the going rate for mechanics around there?or any job for that matter.? This is the kinda info that i was looking for...cost of living, job rates,housing etc. in other states... (dont get me wrong.... thank you tokyojoe, for the info but thats the stuff we figured out already)

There are a lot of search functions which allow you to pick a spot and see average wage, number of rental units ( apartments) etc . say if you were moving to Ohio ( no you don't want to,just an example) you can look at the Ohio Housing Finance Agency which will give you listings of all rentals in any given area. Each state has a HFA ( Housing Finance Agency) its a good place to start for shelter!
I would try and pick two or three places and then research them to see if its a fit or not for you.

Okay I live on the Ks side of the Mo state line. Johnson county is the one of the more wealthy countys in the country. Now that is not to say all the county is wealthy but you won't get a house in Johnson county for under 110k. My house is about 1200 sqft ranch and a small yard no basement etc. Nothing special and I basically paid about 95 bucks for sqft of home. My house is average for my area of the county but if you drive less than 5 min there are houses with 3500+ sqft.

No my buddy lives on the other side of the state line and bought a house for 200k. He has about 2700sqft house, 5 acres, a 20x40 pole barn, and a 30x60 shop. He paid for 70 bucks a sqft.

Jobs and houseing is going to be about the same as the rest of the country. Crappy. not much more I can say about that.

I would go and look on realtor.com or something like that and do a search for what you want in a house on either coast and then in the midwest and you'll see the difference.

Also gas is only 1.85gl right now. :roll:

im paying 1.79...hahahaha, :lol: oops i mean, thanks for the info im checking out realtor.com now. your right about the comparison.
My brother called me this morning from North Carolina, and offered me a position at a 4wheel Drive store down there, and said his neighboor, bought his own house and is going to rent the old one for $550(some utes. included) thats a steal considering i rent a house here for double that without the utilities. The wifey and I are looking at the pros and cons of such a move. :|
