The Winchester Model 94. What is out there today that is like the 94? The lever action and length.

What cartridge and length was your old one? I've been shopping for a lever action too. Here is some of the stuff I've gathered so far... Marlin's 1894 Cowboy (beautiful gun) is made for pistol-caliber rounds - 45 Colt, 357 Mag./38 Spl. and 44 Mag./44 Spl. Henry makes a "new model" (30-06), a Lever Action (.22LR), Lever Action Magnum (22 Magnum), Lever Carbine (22LR), Golden Boy (22LR), Varmint Express (17HMR), and the Big Boy line (44 Magnum, 45 Colt & 357 Magnum). Most of these can be had in black steel or brass with round or octagon barrels. I don't think any of the following are still in production, but they would be good to keep an eye out for: Marlin's model 336, model 1895, and 444 Browning BLR (multiple chamberings) Ruger model 96 or model 44 Savage model 99 ....and, of course.... Winchester model 94 |

Thanks! I'll have to do some looking. What I'm going to do is make a mount for the inside roof of the KJ for it. All I'll have to do is grab and pull down. Up there it will be sort of out of sight, but handy. Terry |

Terry If you want 30-30 get a Marlin 336c. I have one and it is a sweet shooter. If you want a Winchester 94 you need to get one that was made before 1964.....made better.....but worth more so you will pay more. I had one and sold it when I was going through a "stupid" phase of my life after my liberation from my x. Those 2 are good up here in heavy woods for deer. I don't know about Florida. What are you going to use it for?? Usage would dictate which rifle and caliber to get. If you want something to carry you need a handgun. Revolvers are the most powerful but you don't want a hand cannon that you can't control either. Then, practice, practice, practice. Getting any rifle out of a vehicle is a manuverability problem although a 336c or model 94 are actually carbines and shorter than rifles. Just my opinion. |

Terry Check with an NRA-friendly lawyer on that Terry. In some states keeping it on the ceiling like that might be (anti-gun) argued as "concealed." Personally, I like having a handgun in the Jeep over having a rifle, but I always have a handgun on me, so that takes care of that. I too would like to keep a rifle in the jeep and, oddly enough, I have thought about mounting it on the ceiling too. I would probably lean toward keeping a shotgun in there instead of a rifle, but that's personal preference. If you do mount in the Jeep, document it and let me know what you do. I am very interested in your mounting process. I have also thought about mounting a handgun holster under the driver's seat. It's a bit crowded down there with all the heating and power cables, but I think it's something that could be done. |

I'm going to call my brother tomorrow to see if he still has his 94. It wasn't used much and would be an early 60's make. The major drawback I see is that it would have to be unloaded to carry in the KJ. When in a hurry who wants to load a 94 at 1 round at a time? I'm not think of using it or carrying it in Florida. That would be mainly for the southwest and certain other places. In those areas it would be loaded at all times. The rounds would be modified like we did for the M-16 in Vietnam. Little hole in and nothing left on the exit side. The length of the 94 should be okay for a fast grab and exit the Jeep. Yet it will reach out and touch someone you don't want to get in close. i've only done it once, but i helped my neighbor build and finish one of those .58 some cal black powder rifles, fun to build, fun to shoot once or twice but i can't say I liked it as much as modern rifles pretty cool to see 4x4's explode though, i do mean the wooden kind too lol |
