I think this is a pretty accurate comparison between Jeep and Hummer vehicles.

A properly trained operator with a totally stock H1 will and can out do a heavily modified TJ or JK or XJ.The key is a properly trained operator. Please don't compare idiot drivers or H2/H3's to a properly trained H1 operator or compare a properly trained operated H1 to any Jeep. There is no comparison, none, nill, zero, zilch.

Meeeeeeeeoooooooowwww!!!!!

Yeah it was a joke. But I do agree with TJKJ. Any vehicle is very dependent upon the driver. There was another post in this section recently about the land rover in mud. Sure the thing could barely make it up the hill. But it was also equipped with some street tires, not even ATs, and I'm sure the driver had no off-road experience so a muddy parking lot proved a difficult task for him.

Honestly my feeling about wheeling different vehicles is.......If you wheel it...and you wrench on it......... You're okay in my book.

Dammit, stop it with the Hummer bashing. I am a fan of the H1, and a little towards the H3. Plus, wait till you all start seeing those H3's on the trail soon. (hopefully)

Anyways, the Hummers are pefectly capable, although not very high, they have the best drive system available.

I have a buddy that wheels an H3, so far he has had nothing but problems with it while offroading. A broken front diff (we all hear those stories about the KJ's), his airbags deploying while wheeling. Once the dealership even told him that his body mounts needed to be lubed........lol. Anyway it does fair and I like them the best of the play Hummer line. H1's are amazing, I have wheeled with one back when I was in NM and the things it could do far exceeded what I could do in my TJ. Like was said, someone who knows how to operate them can do amazing things in them.

my dad has an H2.... he does not wheel it.. he has a rubicon for that... but we love the h2.. really cant ask for anything more as far as towing and road manners.. for what it can tow you'd have to buy a big 1 ton truck or suburban.. both are much longer than the hummer and we prefer an SUV. plus the ground clearance and 35's really help make it up our 1/4mile uphill (both ways.. seriously) driveway in the winter. and i'm sick of hearing about hummers with bad gas milage.. we get 10-11mpg... which is the same as those big dodge trucks with hemi's ... and close to all other full size trucks with a remotely powerful v8. the only downfall for offroad is their size and IFS.. but even with that it still comes with 35 BFG AT's and locking diff's.. and we all know what can be done with lockers and IFS... not to mention 35's and a v8.

ok my ranting is done.. haha

I'll bet that few people outside of enthusiasts even think of the H1 when they think of Hummer. They sold very very few civilian versions and it has been out of production for a few years now. True, it is the only real Hummer and not a re-bodified version of a shared GM platform. It was designed under AMC via AMGeneral in the '70's.

To the vast majority of folks, the Hummer is just the H2, which is a gmt900 just like the Tahoe no matter what Hummerites say, and the H3, which is a gmt355, the same platform as the Canyon/Colorado. I don't hear anyone crowing about the off-road prowress of any of Hummer's stablemates, do you? Ton's of late model GMT900's (Tahoes/Yukons/'burbans/Avalanches/Escalades) and GMT355 (Canyons & Colorados) were sold, yet none of them are regulars on the trails, are they? Why would the H2 or H3 be any different?

I'd like some info as to what makes the "best drive system?" The rubicon, as one example, would probably have some issues with this statement. And the Dodge Power Wagon, as another. Or anything with a SFA instead of IFS. In the H3's case, consider the 4700# + curb weight & a tiny front IFS diff with big tires and half-shafts. That, my friend, is a recipe for disaster.

To lump the H1 in with those other two excercises in marketing is a crime, in my eyes.

EDIT: I have a question regarding locking differentials on the H2. I am not saying they did not have them, but I cannot find a factory front locking diff for the H2, only the rear. Can you point me towards info about the factory front locking diff on an H2 ( or H3, for that matter)? Thanks much.

typo.. it's only the rear that comes with a locker.. in the H2.

but hey.. to do this with any STOCK vehicle is saying something.... plus you can tow your 8200lb camper to the trail :)

Kind of surprises me that somebody with a Liberty would talk down about a Hummer

Honestly, those vids aren't that impressive to me, especially when I consider the cash outlay involved. I'm not sure about "stock," either. The car stunt H2 had stickers on the suspension & aftermarket tires, both things that might indicate modification. The camera work is junk, and I am wondering what might not have been shown as the pics & camera angles are not ones anyone with any sense would have chosen. In the 2nd one, don't confuse the dramatics of the vehicle with the difficulty of the obstacle. Most any stock-to-mildly built CJ/TJ/YJ/FSJ/Commando/KJ would have done that with no drama for a lot less coin. I don't think it would have given a stock Power Wagon or Rubi a moment's pause. I know I would not hesitate to take my KJ through there, even with less then $20K spent on it, including original purchase price and mods. A vehicle better suited to off-roading than the H2 could have used different lines & techniques to make all of that show the H2 needed uneccessary. Notice they don't show that TJ going through the same obstacle... :D

Did you see the recent pics of KJ04 ( I think) climbing the waterfall? Do you think that the staged car stunt or that bit of off-roading in the vid nears the difficulty of that waterfall? I honestly don't.

It is nice to use adjectives like "big one ton" truck but the one ton trucks are no bigger than the 1/2 tons. The Ram 1500 has a towing capacity of 9,100 #'s, while a "big one ton" of the same physical size starts at 15,600 #'s and goes up, far greater than 8,200 #'s of the H2 & that only started in 2008. Prior to that, the towing capacity of an H2 was 7,000 #'s. ( www.dodge.com & www.howstuffworks.com)

Ok.. not to keep arguing but.. the first 2 videos were STOCK h2's including the tires... the 3rd video was not.. and i didnt say it was.. it was still impressive.. also you can get an used H2 for well under $20,000 (so the "cash outlay" can be much much much less than jeeps or other vehicles)... and i'd like to see any KJ,TJ,YJ do the same as the H2 (even with IFS) that ran over the car.

and the pics of KJ04 climbing the waterfall (i have walked up that waterfall by the way.. it's in wellsville OH where the midwest had lasts years "turkeyrun").... that's comparing apples to oranges that is a waterfall.. the hummer was in moab type terrain in durango CO. regardless there is no way you can argue that the H2 is not a very capable vehicle right from the factory.. and you can CLEARLY see in the videos i posted above the proof that they ARE very capable... and stock for stock.. any jeep besides a rubicon could not follow a hummer though the videos i posted above.. granted the hummer is limited by trail size.. in the videos above my statements all remain true.

and as far as towing.. an H2 can still tow more than a tahoe, a lot of suburbans, toyotas, jeeps, and avalanches.

But Digger, I wanted to hear about towing capacity!

It's all good. I would never waste the money to smash that R/C toy in the first video, anyway. With my luck, it would have cut a tire.... :D
