Post subject:  Wrench-a-thon 2 (no jeep yet GRRR) - got a VW question too?

Well so far I have yet to really get any Jeep work done this pass. Last time I ended up with 3 jeeps in the driveway with the hoods up and absolutely loved it..

WAT2 has been the direct opposite, i figured out my CB wasn't going to fit in my console after taking the bin out, no biggy I'll just put it elsewhere, I did aquire some weather stripping to seal up around the back glass where my CB Coax comes in at though. Figured I'd try that before drilling and notching the pinch the weatherstripping slips over inorder to run the coax through there.. incase I do that and it still leaks, we'll see :)

Ok so here we go, my friends wife's VW bug needed um.. Everything? And alot of stuff we didn't have.. apparently..

Started to put brakes and rotors all the way around, Freakin allen bolts for the calipers were a 7 .. every allen set we had omitted metric 7. 6 yes.. 8 yes.. 7 no. So out of 7 sets of allens and a handfull of assorted ones, no 7. Trip to autozone, metric 7 allen 3/8ths socket set of 5 aquired, front brakes done. Beer was drank.

Back brakes.. Oh yeahhh.. this crap has the hold your mouth right put pressure on piston and turn it at the same time to depress stupidity. Yeah, no tool for that either and nothing we had layin around was working. Trip to autozone, tool borrowed. I thought I was done with that *#&% when I got rid of my lumina. If my jeep has that crap I'm buying the kit autozone loaned us that has like 10 adapters and the fake brake pad piece. More beer was drank. Jack handle sheered off, threw jackhandle across yard, used closest screw driver finished jacking up car, bent screw driver, kept it as a "SPECIALTY TOOL". Finished rear brakes, dog brings back jackhandle, kept it as a "SPECIALTY TOOL" Took loaner tools back to autozone, drank more beer.

Pulled bug around to the backyard and into garage to change sparkplugs. Examined situation, determined plenum had to come off. Examined situation. Determined other things to remove. Examined Allen head situation.

I thought we already did this today...

No metric 5 allen head would reach to the rear allen heads on the mid gasket of the plenum and attacking it from underneath was impossible due to angle restrictions since there was a PLENUM OVERTOP OF IT. Top down only way. Finnnne.. Sat beer back down, went to autozone... "Hey.. guys welcome back?"

Bought the longest freaking pack of allen head wrenches they had. (No. the pack does not include a metric 7 either thank god we didn't need THAT again) Also bought a questionably fancy spark plug boot puller since just because you can put your index finger on the back of the boots super-duper heat shield doesn't mean you can GRAB IT. And for like 100 bucks we weren't risking the channel locks on them.

Took the plenum off, didn't wreck the gasket, yay cause autozone didn't have that in stock here. Drank beer. Examined airbox. Found really odd.. something or other STUMP for all intents and purposes..

WTF is this. Why? What's it do? Are you sure?? -Physical description, like 2 foot long plastic side pipe to the airhose, the STUMP runs up along side the airbox.. Some kind of airbox Dildo... Apparently to get in your friggin way when trying to take the cap off the brake fluid resovoir and to serve no other useful purpose other than a waste of plastic and space. Drank beer. Had friend hold stupid object for picture purposes.

The hose opening you see connects to the side of the airbox that air to the engine travels out of and to the engine and the stump goes between the airbox and the brake fluid resovoir :?

ok so plenums off, finessed the plug wires off the sparkplugs.

Ok, quick background info.

the car has like 140k Plugs have never been changed. The plugs were like fuzed to the head and-or way over torqued. The best one read right over 150 ft/lbs when it creaked the first creak. I thought I was going to end up having to helicoil all 4 of them. Finessed them out after more beer. Started making row of beer cans on shelf in garage.

Took out the last plug, Ooh.. one of these things is not like the other
Apparently it had been taken in for a miss on Cyl 1 at some point. There was a bosch platnum in Cyl 1 or.. decided to change ONE plug at the normal sparkplug interval, looked like NGK iridiums possibly in 2 3 and 4. They had VW NGK markings. Not a great pick but you get the drift...

Image

they got the bug when it had right under 60k. My best guestimate is the bosch was put in shortly prior to it's sale. That puts, 80k on the bosch, and 140 on the NGK's. The bosch was the worst plug out of the 4 and one of the 2 electrodes had really bit the dust all together at first glance i thought cyl 1 was pre igniting but I think the plug was just worn out. All of the NGK's were worn out but didn't look nearly as bad as the bosch. I kind of wish there had been an Autolite and a Champion in the mix too  ok, I guess we can just skip the champion, we DO wan't the engine to actually still be able to run to drive up to the garage after 80k much less 140k.

Drank more beer, put new plugs in, wrestled the friggin boots back on..

Picturing vehicle in flames now..

Image

Drank more beer while putting plenum back on. Real radiator hose clamps sure are nicer to put back on than getting off one of those crimped in hose clamps that just happened to be between the rear of the plenum and the firewall

Finished putting everything back together, made the necessary quadrouple checks and drinking of beer.

Yeah.. See the STUMP in it's comfy home??

Image

Freakin VW.

It runs like brand new which is good. Because if it didn't I was probably going to be very tempted to beat the plenum back off the engine with a maul. Matter of fact it ran REALLY good, I didn't realize that the bug was supposed to have that much pep  I guess it helps when you bleed on them a little.

For future reference, this is what it takes to get me to work on a VW for a good part of the day.

Other than where's the couch.. the only thing I want to know right now is..

WHAT IS THAT STUMP???

HAHAHA....LMAO. Great post...it definitley entertained me.

My patience would have been wasted after the broken jack handle and all the beer consumed.

My sister has a new bug and while I've never done anything to it besides change out the front head light bulbs...I do know there is nothing harder than working on a VW. I owned a 81' Rabbit diesel and wrenched on it for fun. I know all about having to have "special tools." My friend and me usually just made our own and hoped for the best since it wasn't a daily driver....

And as for your answer...its the intake duct resonator. :)

BTW...does that car eat...and I mean EAT front tires like their going out of style?

His wife think's her name is Mari(a) Andretti

in otherwords, yes but i'm not sure that a majority of the wear is due to the vehicles characteristics versus the drivers characteristics

my patience with a wrench is fairly endless, i just walk away for a few and have a drink if it's starting to really bother me

so it's an intact duct resonator, well that's the what

but what about the Why? lol

Glad you enjoyed the post, I thought much of it was pretty humorous myself

Na I'm pretty sure that its pretty much the car. I mean I'm sure that the driving characteristics only help to make it worse, but my sister doesn't drive fast or aggressive at all (kinda fits the car ya know...lmao  ) and hers still kills tires in under 15-20K which is HORRIBLE life for tires. And the tires put on her car were NOT walmart specials. The front suspension has some major problems with the camber and alignment. I've heard it from alot of other Bug owners too...

Plus if you ever get the chance to drive one (as if you'd want to...lol) it is the scariest car to drive in the rain or after rain. It hydro planes over EVERYTHING...its like the wheel is litterally jerked out of your hands. It's really scary. The smallest puddle will make it want to rip you off the road or start you in a slide.

As for the resonator. My only educated guess would be to change the flow style of air or create a pocket that could change or manipulate the velocity of air heading into the engine? I imagine air flows similarly to water or lighter liquids in a sense that the flow could become "turbulent", and this would create problems heading into the engine. I've seen these on other vehicles but I have no idea.
