Post subject:  Question regarding oil change for a non-liberty
I just purchased a very used 1991 Ford Escort 5 speed to get back and forth to work. From what I can tell, the car has 140,000 miles (no 6th digit on the odometer). I am going to do an oil change tomorrow (with 5w30 as directed) but I am wondering what brand and type of oil others would suggest using. I am not sure whether I should go with a semi-synthetic or a high mileage oil. Any help with this would be really appreciated.

I'm no expert, but I like Mobil 1 synthetic or Amsoil.

I used Mobil 1 synthetic exclusively on my first Prius, and the engine was still running great at over 200K miles. Changed the oil & filter every 5 - 7K miles.

With the miles you gave I'd say just go with a high mileage oil or just a standard 5W-30.

To be honest (And nothing against the 2nd gen Escorts...far better car than the 3rd gens, ITBJHO)

Put whatever's cheap in it man

That 1.9 will go 300,000 miles with "whatever cheap crap my mechanic puts in it" (Grampa's words, not ThunderbirdJunkie's)

The Grampa has owned no less than - no exaggeration - TWELVE Escorts and Tracers, about 50% bought new, since 1983, and all of them have had AT LEAST 200k on them before they got sent to the scrapyard.

If ya need to know anything about a maintenance regimen that will make the car last forever, ThunderbirdJunkie will ask his grampa. He has it down to a science...he's got an 86 wagon with 220k on it (bought new, granny drives) and an '02 (which he only bought because it was the last year for it and the good ol' motor he's "YOUSTA WORKIN ON") with about 75.

that '86 is a better driving car than one of ThunderbirdJunkie's associate's 99 Escort ZX2 5 speed with a bunch of new parts and 80k on it :shock:

I would just go with a high mileage oil. I've heard switching to synthetic in older high mileage motors starts big leak ,etc.
Just make sure the timing belt gets changeed. If it breaks at any speed...there goes the valves, possible a piston. Luckily the one in my wifes 86 broke at idle, we got safe on that one

At that mileage you will be better off using good ol dino oil and save the synthetic for the KJ.

thats what i was going to say. if its lasted 240000miles now on reg oil just let her buck for another 100000. no point in changing something if its been working
