I guee this is the place to post this http://www.sema.org/sema-enews/2009/14/ ... 5x58430294 I get the sema newsletter it is an after market show that also carries over to 4X4s....This is a link to their article talking about: The Scappage program which will accelerate the demise of older vehicles, which are then typically crushed into blocks of sheet metal. Program supporters focus on a car's age or fuel efficiency rating rather than its actual emissions or how much it is driven. SEMA has consistently warned against wasting taxpayer dollars on a program that may produce an artificial spike in sales, but does not reduce emissions or increase fuel efficiency. this can seriously effect off roaders whose many vehicles could fall into this catagory |

If they're trying to reduce the amount of natural resources consumed, building cars/parts is certainly the way to do it They did this about 10 years ago with old cars in California and Wash St. Exxon was buying them for $700. |

Cheaper/easier for a company to spend to scrap than to fix their own emissions related problems......"offsetting"....BS! I sure wish I had the place and money to buy up hundreds of old classics to save them from the crusher. Now if they want to take ALL of the cars from 1974-1990's off the road, cept for those that pass smog, more power to them. Seriously, what cars from that time period really matter anyway? (cept for any of the actual "performance" models built during that time) |

So what about the fact that my 1988 Olds 98 (3.8L V6) gets nearly double the gas mileage that my 2003 KJ (3.7L V6) gets? Factor in the mpg vs emissions and I bet my old 98 is better to run than my gas hog KJ. |

like I said, if it passes smog who cares. I see so many 80's-90s cars that are piles of crap, regardless of if they pass smog, they probably wouldn't pass a safety check in states that have them and some it is obvious that they are not running well. Those can go. My point is other than transportation, they have no collector value, etc. and often are barely maintained. I am not talking about the ones that are cared for, run clean and efficient and pass smog easily. Could just be in my ghetto town there are too many piles of crap running around that I am tired of seeing. I just want these compaines/gubment to leave the classics/collector cars, etc. alone since they are such a small part of any smog problem we have. |

Who ever dreams this stuff up has to be stoned out of their mind. Old cars and trucks are part of our History. Update: I wrote my Congressman, more should do the same. |

I'd do that but, NJ is controlled by Loony libs and they simply refuse to listen to the voice of the 'unwashed masses'. |

Where does it say that the government is going to come into your garage and take your old cars from you? It's if you WANT to turn in that old POS smoker and get a tax credit to get something news. And I would assume the tax credit would be more then what they would get trading it in, or selling it. And if someone is dumb enough to give away a "old classic" then they are an idiot. |

(cept for any of the actual "performance" models built during that time) I have read this from many sources, and everyone has a different take. First off, I don't see a huge deal as it is voluntary. If I want to trade a '69 Mach 1 to be scrapped, that is my business. If someone else wants to MAKE me do it, we have problems. The car companies are up againts the laws of diminishing returns emissions-wise. No car sold here has a emissions related problem "to be fixed." I have seen reports that the average new car produces 95-98% fewer emisions than a 1974 model. To improve that final 2-5 % is a huge monumental waste. To all intents and purpose, modern cars are emissions free. If you are poor, and have a car that can't pass emission, screw you? But if you have money to keep your old car 100%, that is fine? A bit of (probably unintentional) classism exists in this argument. But you hear it again & again from varied sources. We have no smog testing for cars here. A vehicle emitting excesive smoke as to be a hazard is ticketed & removed from the road, but no emissions testing. This crap started with CARB and frankly the sooner the Kali's throw CARB into the Pacific, the better this country will be. We would see a huge jump in mileage & power immediately. |
